Team Preview

It's not too often that your squad has a Division-I college basketball player.

It's more rare to see that player competing in the 2A classification.

But the Salmon Lady Savages had just that last year in Loyola-Marymount committ Deshka Olsen, who led the team in scoring.

The question now is: how do you replace all of that talent and scoring?

Head coach Camille Williams simply said, "Defense".

"We have quick defenders, but need to improve on playing defense as a team: working together and communicating with one another."

A blend of quickness and size is something that almost every coach in basketball would like. Williams has that on her team this season.

Salmon returns 5'11 junior post Ellie Garrett along with speedy 5'6 senior guard Paige Cannon and 5'4 senior guard Shantel Miller. Add in 5'10 sophomore post Kylie Peets, 5'11 junior post Erica Infanger, and 5'8 senior guard Jorgee Shiner, and you have a sizeable front line. Their opponents in the Nuclear Conference are certainly on notice.

"Using our height to our advantage, especially on offense, is a strength," Williams said. "At the same time, improving our shooting percentages has to be goal."

Williams also hopes to instill in her squad a true love for the game of basketball.

"I love this sport and I love to see it when the girls finally get the sport for what it really is. When they understand and see the strategy behind the sport, I love that. I hope that they can love the sport as much as I do."

Having an excellent support staff behind a coach is always a nice addition too.

"The community and fan support is unmatched. Our fans travel a long way to support our school," Williams said. "They are willing to give anything to see the teams succeed."

If Williams can instill the defensive mindset and 'give anything' attitude in her team, Salmon could turn quite a few heads this year.
