Team Preview
Since it won its last state championship in 2006, Lake City has had some pretty good girls basketball teams.
But good luck getting noticed -- much less to state -- in a 5A Inland Empire League where the other three teams have combined to win the last seven state titles. Coeur d'Alene won four of them, Lewiston two, Post Falls one.
Lake City returns six players from last year's 12-11 team -- senior point guard Natalie Wheelock, senior guard Clarissa Smith, junior guards Olivia Maryon, Whitney Meier and Cierra Dvorak, and sophomore post Nina Carlson.
The Timberwolves lost a couple of key players to graduation from last year -- post Madi Farrell, a two-time all-5A IEL selection, and guard Hailey Jackson, an all-league pick last year.
But Bryan Kelly, in his third year as head coach, has added a couple of young posts to go with Carlson -- Lauren Rewers, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, and Keara Simpson, a 6-1 freshman.
"We have some strong posts, so we are planning to be able to get up and down the court with some athletic guards and pound the ball inside," Kelly said.
To do that, Kelly said, Lake City will need to take care of the ball better, and limit turnovers.
"I think we have 10 players that will all be able to contribute," he said. "We have a good combination of guards and posts."
Count Kelly as among those coaches who would like to see a shot clock added in Idaho.
"We need one to get the game going faster," he said.
Kelly said he loves coaching basketball because "It teaches life lessons that kids can take into their future lives."
Lake City opens its season Nov. 18 at Lakeland. The Timberwolves have just six regular-season games scheduled for home.
