Dealing with lower than ideal turnout rates for the girls basketball team, first year Head Coach Joel Tews will be tasked with turning around a Camas County program which has struggled in recent seasons.
With powerhouses such as Dietrich and Lighthouse Christian also residing within the conference, the task for the Mushers will be to find a way to become competitive against quality competition.
Defensively the team was able to help themselves stay close for the majority of games last season.
The problem for Camas County was finding multiple playmakers who had the ability to fill up the scoreboard.
Perhaps the most ready to step into a big-time scoring role will be Adriane McGuire, the only senior on the squad this year.
“[Adriane] is the only senior on the squad, so we are looking for not only her leadership, but also anyone else to step up and the lead this ground floor opportunity in building a contender in the state,” said Tews.
The coach thinks he has the right group of girls to start a turnaround this season.
“Great positive attitudes [and] team-oriented players,” he added. “[They] want to be the team that starts the ground floor rebuild of the program.”
An interesting prospect will be asked to help improve the Mushers on both ends of the floor.
“Tana Sabin has not played since junior high,” stated Tews. “Despite not playing since junior high, Tana is a good athlete with natural basketball abilities.”
Sabin is a junior at Camas County.
Defensively the squad will rely on a pressure man-to-man style, while on the other end the Mushers will run a disciplined half-court offense.
With a small team size-wise, the unit will need to play disciplined on both sides of the ball, especially on defense, where the high-powered scoring attacks in the North Side Conference can fill up the basket in a hurry.
“[We] will have to play calculated pressure defense with the mentality of containing penetration,” said Tews. “Communication among the team will be critical in stopping some of the high-powered offense we will see this season.”
The new coach thinks he has players with the right mindset to bring some more success inside the gym in Fairfield this winter.
“This is a very enthusiastic, hard-working group of girls. If the saying ‘attitude is everything’ applies, this team could beat expectations and make some noise come tournament time,” stated Tews.
