Team Preview

The Boise Braves return four out of five starters from last year’s state participant squad, and will start the 2014-15 season as one of the favorites to win the 5A Southern Idaho Conference. The Braves lone loss from last year’s team was Natasha Dacic, who owns a roster spot for the College of Idaho.
Boise will start the season with a plethora of scorers, starting with Junior post, SIC first team selection/5A All Idaho 2nd team selection, Isabelle Hadden and Senior guard, SIC second team selection, Megan Lee, both leading the Braves in scoring last season at 10.7 points per game. The Braves also return another double digit scorer in Junior guard, SIC honorable mention, Hanna Orton who averaged 10.2 points per contest. Add in a couple of underclassman in Sophomore forward, Mandy Simpson and Sophomore guard Audrey Dingel, and Boise will have five players that can fill up the stat sheet on a nightly basis.
The Braves did however suffer one setback in the offseason with Senior Lydia Miles going down to an ACL injury over the summer. Lydia had surgery in June and the team hopes to have her back for the games leading into district playoffs. In Lydia’s absence, tenth-year Coach Kimberly Brydges plans to have Sophomore Audrey Dingel handle much of the point guard duties to start the season.
With an abundance of people who can score for the Braves, comes the challenge of getting everyone to buy in to the team’s schemes and philosophes, and play together as one unit. If Boise wants to return to the state tournament again this season Coach Brydges stated, “We need to gain comfort with our new offensive schemes and play together as a team. In order for us to compete well in a very tough SIC league, we need to stay healthy and continuously work on improvement. We want to be playing our best basketball come February.”
Boise looks to be a very tough team to guard this season, but don’t underestimate the Braves ability to rebound, pass, and play great defense. The Braves two starting guards, Lee and Orton, both averaged a very-respectable 2.6 and 2.4 steals per game last season. Their height at 5’8” and 5’7” makes it hard for the opposition to see over them and helps them to clog up the passing lanes and get deflections on the ball.
On paper, Boise looks like the team to beat in the SIC conference for the 2014-15 season. If the Braves can stay healthy, work together, and continually improve throughout the season, they will be the ones besting last year’s effort of a second place finish in the SIC conference, to putting on the conference crown this season.
