BOYS BASKETBALL

GAME OF THE NIGHT

Cole Valley Christian 69, Ambrose 60

Don’t let the Chargers’ nine-point margin of victory fool you.  This game wasn’t decided until the final 20 seconds of action.  The latest classic in this rivalry between former league rivals (Cole Valley Christian is now a 4A school, while Ambrose is still in Class 3A) featured several lead changes and exciting plays throughout.  Trailing 60-59, Cole Valley Christian sophomore Cooper Kollmann hit a three with 18 seconds to play, pushing the Chargers ahead 62-60.  Kollmann then intercepted a down-court pass on the ensuing possession, and the Chargers made their free throws to pad the lead late.  The victory snapped a two-game losing streak to the Archers, as Ambrose won a matchup earlier this season 78-71, and defeated the Chargers in last year’s 2A State Championship Game, 46-43.

PRIME-TIME PERFORMER

Kellogg improved to 6-4 overall after a dominant 55-34 win over Wallace on Monday night.  6-foot-3 junior Draeden Taylor was locked in, scorching the nets for 29 points, more than 50% of Kellogg’s total scoring.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

GAME OF THE NIGHT

Wendell 41, Declo 39

Wendell completed a season sweep of the Hornets for the first time since the 2013-14 season, a watershed moment for coach Tia Standlee in her second season on the Trojan sidelines.  This back-and-forth battle wasn’t decided until the final moments, when made free throws from Kaleimys Nieves and Jacelynn Olmos provided the two-point margin of victory for Wendell.  Nieves finished with 19 points, while Olmos added nine.  Wendell is now 10-4 overall and 3-3 in South East Idaho Conference play.  Declo is 5-11 and 1-4.

PRIME-TIME PERFORMER

The Class 1A Highland Huskies have quietly been enjoying a breakout season, starting 9-3 overall and 4-1 in Whitepine League play.  The winning continued Monday night in a 34-33 non-conference win over Logos.  Kylee Beck controlled the paint in the win, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.  Beck also hit the game-winning basket with just 30 seconds to play.
