The 2024 season of high school volleyball is here!
Jamborees and annual season-opening tournaments took place this past week.
Madison and Rigby looked strong in their jamboree, hosted by Bonneville.
Madison won all of their games against Rigby, Pocatello, Butte County, Thunder Ridge and the hosts from Bonneville.
The Bobcats return a strong team as they only lost one senior last year. They look forward to new challenges this year in the newly revamped 6A classification.
Rigby also looks strong this year with solid experience and strength. The Trojans won four of five matches at the Bonneville jamboree (losing only to Madison), which should make the race between the Trojans and Bobcats in the 6A High Country Conference intriguing this year.
Moving on to regular season competition, the annual Peg Peterson Tournament (hosted by Highland High School in Pocatello) took place last weekend. 28 teams from almost every classification battled Friday and Saturday.
The overall winner came out of the Boise side of the state this year. Congratulations to the Centennial Patriots! This is the first time Centennial has won the Peg Peterson Tournament, and they are excited to start off the season with a hard-fought tournament championship win!
The Patriots went undefeated on the weekend, beating Pocatello twice, along with Rigby, Capital, Malad, Sugar-Salem and Firth. Centennial won the Gold Bracket, while Fruitland topped the Silver Bracket and Wood River claimed the Bronze Bracket.
Centennial lost five seniors, but return nine players to their roster this year. Among the returnees are seven seniors who are attempting to lead Centennial to a state bid this season. They have a tough schedule and conference slate ahead, but again, they are excited for the work and opportunities ahead.
Centennial’s Eliana Ti’a led the way. She averaged eight kills per set on the weekend, and finished with a hitting percentage of .354. Anything above .250 at the high school/college level for an outside hitter is amazing! Eliana also led her team in serve-receive percentage and total digs for the weekend.
Daelyn Harris was another outstanding senior leader for Centennial, as she led the Patriots in blocks and aces, and added a hitting percentage of .422!
We can’t wait to watch Centennial grow and see what they can accomplish this season. It’s still early, and many teams haven’t even played a game yet!
Again, it was impressive to see all of the teams and talent on display from all over the state, and from all different sizes of classifications at the Peg Peterson Tournament this weekend.
As we look forward to what lies ahead, we will see lots of changes within competition due to team classification and petition changes, but what remains constant is our excitement and enthusiasm!
We want to wish all of our Idaho high school teams the best of luck this season!
