Post season wrestling is alive and well in the state of Idaho and abroad and to date the Gem State has represented well among the nation’s elite. More recently, a contingent of Idaho wrestlers fared well at the Women’s National Championships in Washington and this past weekend multiple age group wrestlers competed at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas where several earned All-American honors in the process.
At the 2024 Women’s National Championships, Liv Weiber of Eagle added to her solid wrestling resume by earning another All-American honor in the U23 division. A graduate of Eagle High School in 2022, Wieber is a two-time NAIA All-American for Eastern Oregon University and has also earned NAIA Scholar All-American honors. In the U17 division, Blackfoot’s frosh State Champion Keanna Conrad added to her recent National title by earning All-American honors in the 16U division. The future looks bright at the grassroots level as four Idaho wrestlers earned All-American honors in the 14U Girl’s division. They include Mackenzie Dolan, Mylah Henebry, Whitney Cawthra, and Kalayah White. The future looks bright!
This past weekend, the US Open in Las Vegas featured many of our nation’s top age group wrestlers in the country. In the U20 division, the Gem State represented well in Greco. Leading the charge was U20 World Bronze medalist and Suples standout Aden Attao, an alumnus of Borah High School. Currently competing for Oregon State University and coming off a third place finish at the Olympic trials, Attao left no doubt that he is among the top future talents in Greco by winning the 130 kg weight group in addition to bringing home All-American honors in Freestyle. He was joined on the medal stand by state rival Shilo Jones of Mountain View High School (North Dakota State
commit), who with this tournament placing earned his 14th career prep level All-American honor. Impressive!!! Other All-Americans include Blackfoot’s 5x Fargo Champion Mack Mauger (Missouri commit), multiple All-American Tanner Frothinger (Eagle alumnus), Suples’ Lukas Kanownik, and Bishop Kelly’s Jadon Skellenger, an accomplished U.S. and international Greco wrestler committed to compete for Lehigh University in the Fall.
In the U15 and U17 divisions, Idaho produced a total of five All-Americans in Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Only a freshman at Eagle High School, the future looks bright for Suples’ Ivan Ivanov as he dominated his competition in the U15 Greco division and earned his first national title in championship format after placing runner-up last year in the 14U. Joining Ivanov on the medal stand include Blake Nevils, multiple All-American Carlos Valdez of Bishop Kelly (Suples WC), Holton Crane (Bishop Kelly), and Fargo 16U Greco National Champion Saxton Scott of Idaho Falls.
It is common knowledge that girl’s wrestling is the fastest growing prep sport in the country. In the midst of this rapid growth, the Gem State has represented well on the national scene. At Vegas, four wrestlers from the greater Boise metropolitan earned All-American honors in the Girls High School Showcase Division. Ranked number one among the top prep wrestlers in the country, Kaidance Gerg of Meridian added to her Fargo title by reaching the championship finals, adding another All-American honor to her resume. She was joined by returning Fargo All-Americans Clare Waite of Boise High School (North Central College commit), Amy Hartman (Mountain Home H.S.) in addition to four-time high school state placer Holland Wieber of Eagle High School, who will be heading to Southern Oregon in the Fall.
Also representing the Suples Wrestling Club on the medal stand include two-time Bulgarian National Champion and European Team member Mitko Georgiev. Currently the strength, wrestling, and condition coach at Suples, Georgiev had a solid performance winning the Masters Greco Division in the 70 kilogram weight group. He was joined by brothers Devin and Austin Garcia, each up and coming age group talent that earned All-American honors in the UWW Futures Divisions. In Freestyle, Devon earned a national title in the 41 kilogram weight group while Austin earned a runner up finish at 33 kg.
Overall, the Gem State of Idaho represented well on the national stage and I commend all wrestlers for their hard work and commitment to compete against the best of the best. Job well done! I look forward to the next few months as Idaho prepares for the U.S. Fargo Nationals in North Dakota. Stay tuned! See list of All-Americans below.
