An incredible day of championship basketball at the Idaho Center ended with a good matchup for the 5A state title, with the (#4) Coeur D’Alene Vikings defeating the (#2) Lake City Timberwolves 58-49.
The season series belonged to Lake City entering this championship game, with the Timberwolves beating the Vikings on Jan. 12th and Jan. 22nd, but the Vikings taking game number three on Feb. 6th in the district championship game.
Coeur d’Alene had a tough road to get to this point, having to face the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies in a rematch of last year’s championship game in the first round (a 50-40 win), and then battling the #1 seed Boise Brave in a 58-55 nail-biter. Those two wins were numbers 98 and 99 for head coach Nicole Symons, and the Vikings were searching for not only a state title, but win number 100 for coach Symons.
The first half was a back and forth one, as both teams kept each other in check as they exchanged field goals and free throws, with the game being tied 16 apiece at halftime.
Momentum was still with both teams in the second half, but as the fourth quarter was being played out, miscommunication struck down on the Timberwolves. Lake City committed 12 turnovers in the contest, with most of them occurring in the fourth quarter
That didn’t stop the Vikings momentum as seniors Teagan Colvin and Maddie Mitchell, junior Kelsey Caroll, and freshman Brookeslee Colvin led the charge for Coeur d’Alene both offensively and defensively. With six minutes left in the fourth, Brookeslee Colvin had a behind the back block preventing a layup for Lake City, and Teagan Colvin, Mitchell, and Carroll were able to sink field goals and keep possession in favor for Coeur D’Alene as they moved towards a win.
The IdahoSports.com Player of the Game presented by the Idaho Office of Highway Safety went to Carroll, who finished with 13 points, four defensive rebounds, three assists, and one steal. What really set her over the edge for this Vikings team is that she was perfect from the field and free throw line.
With this win, the Coeur D’Alene Vikings bring a second straight 5A state championship title.
“It means a lot to the city and especially the team, because we worked so hard all year. A lot of people were putting us off, and it just feels good,” said Carroll regarding her team’s adversity to win another state title.
This Vikings basketball team accomplished another feat: coach Symons winning her 100th career game with the program.
“It makes it so much sweeter because Nicole [Symons] works hard, pushes us hard in practice, wants us to do our best,” said Carroll. “She loves this program so much, and it’s great that she gets this on the 100th win.”
