The Idaho Girls’ Basketball State Championship games kicked off Saturday Feb. 17th, with the (#2) Kendrick Tigers defeating the (#1) Dietrich Blue Devils 55-53 in overtime for the 1AD2 Championship.
Tipoff occurred at 9:30 a.m. MT, and it starred both defenses as the score was 9-6 Kendrick after one quarter of play. Kendrick extended their lead by nine as they outscored Dietrich by six points in the second quarter to secure a 23-14 lead at the half.
Once the second half of play ensued, the Tigers hopped out to the largest lead of the game at 37-24, and eventually led after three quarters of play, 37-28.
With hope for the Blue Devils dwindling, the fourth quarter belonged to the Blue Devils. Led by Aleigha Robertson and Kaitlyn Wanamaker, Dietrich scored 21 points in the final quarter of regulation to tie the game at 49.
Conquering overtime was no feat for Kendrick senior Harley Heimgartner, as she scored all six points to lead her Tigers to victory.
The IdahoSports.com Player of the Game, presented by the Idaho Office of Highway Safety, was Heimgartner. She scored the most points on her team with 15 and was the go-to player in overtime, scoring all of Kendrick’s points in the extra period.
“It feels really good. Our team has worked so hard ever since we were freshmen and we were in the state championship (a loss to Tri-Valley),” Heimgartner said about her team’s victory. “It hurt really bad to lose, so we wanted to get back here and end it on a good note and that’s what we did.”
The Kendrick girls basketball team joins their football team as being the 1AD2 State Champions of 2023-2024, giving the small town of Kendrick another reason to celebrate. “Our community is so close and supportive, and it feels really good to be able to give it back to them,” Heimgartner added.
