CLASS 5A

Kuna 36, Nampa 34 (OT)

The Kavemen (1-2 Southern Idaho Conference River Division, 3-2 overall) survived in overtime to defeat Nampa (0-3, 0-4).

IdahoSports.com Player of the Game Austin Lattimer finished the contest with 151 yards and four touchdowns.

Lattimer’s first TD, a 13-yard scamper, gave Kuna a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.  Nampa tied the contest at 7-7 on a touchdown pass from Dominick Almaraz to Atreau Titus.

On Kuna’s next possession, Lattimer scored again, and the Kavemen led 14-7 after one quarter of play.

Kuna picked up where they left off to start the second quarter, as Luke Selto scored on a ten-yard run to push the lead out to 21-7.  The score would remain that way until the third quarter, when Lattimer punched it in again for a 28-7 Kuna lead.

That set the stage for Nampa’s comeback.  A 35-yard touchdown run from Josh Peterson, a 32-yard TD pass from Almaraz to Bryce Wallingford, and a ten-yard scoring run from Peterson knotted the contest up at 28-28 in the fourth quarter, and the game went to overtime.

In OT, Kuna started with the ball and scored on a six-yard run from Lattimer.  Nampa jumped offside on the ensuing point after try, moving the ball to the one-yard line.  That’s when Kuna coach Jeff Schank decided to go for the two-point conversion.  Lattimer ran in the conversion, putting Kuna ahead 36-28.

On Nampa’s possession, the Bulldogs scored on their first play, a ten-yard run by Peterson.  Now needing the two-point conversion to send the game to double overtime, though, Nampa dialed up an option play between Almarez and Peterson.  Almarez kept it, and was tackled short of the end zone, sending Kuna off with the win.

Eagle 21, Owyhee 17

Eagle (2-0 SIC River, 4-0 overall) came from behind late in the fourth quarter to defeat Owyhee (1-2, 3-2) in a conference game on Friday.

The came started inauspiciously for the Mustangs, as just twenty seconds into the contest, Eagle quarterback Davis Harsin fumbled the ball after being sacked.  Logan Haustveit recovered for Owyhee, and one play later, Matt Irwin hit Ryan Brekke for a 28-yard touchdown.  That 7-0 lead would hold through the end of the first quarter.

Eagle scored its first touchdown midway through the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by Austin Ramsey to tie the game at 7-7.  But Owyhee’s Nathan Gamette knocked home a 25-yard field goal right before halftime to give the Storm a 10-7 lead.

With just over four minutes remaining in the third, Eagle took their first lead of the night on a one-yard TD pass from Harsin to Zay Wright.  The Mustangs led 14-10 heading into the fourth.

Undeterred, the Storm answered on an 18-yard touchdown run by Timothy Jamerson with 6:19 to play, putting Owyhee ahead 17-14.

Eagle then methodically worked their way down the field, running the ball and the clock until Noah Burnham scored on a four-yard run, giving Eagle the 21-17 lead with just 58 seconds to play.

Mountain View 42, Borah 21

Mountain View (1-1 SIC River, 3-1 overall) handed Borah (2-1, 4-1) their first loss of the season in resounding fashion.

Justin McGee threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the win, while adding 89 yards and a score on the ground.

Borah scored a trio of rushing touchdowns from running back Jevon Nelson, quarterback Jacob Detwiler and wide receiver Tanner Sittser.

Centennial 33, Capital 27 (2OT)

The Patriots fumbled on the first play from scrimmage, and Capital’s #50 recovered inside the Centennial 15.  From there, Canyon Buschbacher kicked a 28-yard field goal, and Capital led 3-0.  On the Eagles’ second possession, a second field goal from Buschbacher, this time from 25 yards out, extended the lead to 6-0.

After forcing another three-and-out from Centennial’s offense on the ensuing possession, Brody Call returned a punt 55 yards for a score and a 13-0 Capital lead.

Centennial finally got on the board at the start of the second quarter on a 12-yard pass from Tate Keddington to Marcus Connors, bringing the Patriots to within 13-7.  The score remained that way at halftime.

Centennial struck again midway through the third quarter on another 12-yard TD from Keddington to Connors, taking their first lead at 14-13.  A four-yard plunge from Jordan Kafari in the fourth pushed the lead out to 21-13.

But on the ensuing kickoff, Call returned it 99 yards for a touchdown to bring the Eagles to within one.  AJ Danaha then ran in the two-point conversion and the two sides went to overtime tied at 21-21.

In the first OT, Kafari scored for Centennial on a five-yard run, but the Patriots’ extra point try went awry on a bad snap, leaving Centennial’s lead at a precarious 27-21.

On Capital’s possession, the Eagles struck gold on their first play from scrimmage, as Brayden Dudley threw a ten-yard dart to Marcellus Clay for the touchdown.  With the game tied 27-27, Capital’s extra point try was blocked, sending the contest to a second overtime.

In double OT, Capital started with the ball, and on their first play from scrimmage, threw an interception to Centennial’s Daniel Demers.  That set up Centennial’s game-winner: a five-yard TD run from Skyler Howard, and a 33-27 double overtime win.

Meridian 35, Timberline 20

The Warriors (2-0 SIC Foothills, 2-2 overall) won a Thursday night contest over Timberline (0-1, 0-4).

Rylie Byington scored two rushing touchdowns to lead Meridian.  Marco Del Rio and Zeke Martinez both scored on the ground as well, and Martinez hit Carver Martin for a TD.

Timberline’s Jack Brant threw touchdown passes to Heath Res and Aidon Nixon, and Bryce Elder hit two field goals.

Madison 52, Thunder Ridge 20

The Bobcats (1-0 High Country Conference, 3-2 overall) won their league opener over Thunder Ridge (0-1, 0-5).

Madison totaled 150 yards rushing with four touchdowns, and added 113 yards and two touchdowns passing.

Thunder Ridge scored on a touchdown run by Nathan Olsen, a touchdown pass from Ryder Portmann to Hudson Harker, and a punt return TD by Trevor Vincent.

Highland 24, Pocatello 17

The Class 5A Rams (4-0) claimed the annual Black and Blue Bowl with a tight win over Class 4A Pocatello (2-1).

Highland built up a 17-0 halftime lead thanks to IdahoSports.com Player of the Game Zerek Younis.  Younis returned an interception 61 yards for a score and also drilled a 28-yard field goal.  Tyson Beckles added a touchdown run in the first half for the Rams.

Pocatello finally broke through in the third quarter with a six-yard TD run from quarterback Dre Contreras.  Highland answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Drew Hymas to Jackson Riddle in the third for a 24-7 advantage.

Undeterred, Pocatello scored on their next possession on another six-yard run from Contreras, bringing the Thunder to within 24-14.  A field goal from Garret Keller trimmed the gap to 24-17 in the fourth.

Then, on Pocatello’s final drive, the Thunder had five chances inside Highland’s ten-yard line to try and tie the game or potentially win the contest.  Contreras threw an incomplete pass to Julian Bowie on first down.  Then, Contreras again threw incomplete to Ty Wilkinson on second down, but Highland was flagged for pass interference.

On the next play, Contreras hit Hunter May for a score, but the touchdown was reversed after Highland coach Nick Sorrell was granted a timeout.  Sorrell had called for the stoppage just before the ball was snapped.  Out of the timeout, Contreras threw incomplete to Wilkinson.

Then, on the final play, Conteras threw a pass to Carson Christensen as time expired, but it bounced off of Christensen’s hands and fell incomplete, sealing the win for the Rams.

Coeur d’Alene 54, Lakeland 0

Class 5A Coeur d’Alene (3-1) raced past a shorthanded Class 4A Lakeland (3-2) squad on Friday night.

The Vikings defense forced four turnovers and held the Hawks to 132 yards of total offense.  Lakeland was missing starting running back Lovie Weil and its top two quarterbacks.

Caden Symons passed for 132 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers (Kolbe Coey, Kai Wheeler Carson Harris and Brett Myers).  Isaac Rook came on in relief of Symons and completed three passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns to Coey and Shea Robertson.  Harris and Carsen Speelman also scored rushing TDs for the Vikes.

Lewiston 39, Pendleton (OR) 12

Noah Carpenter returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and the Bengals (2-2) were off to the races from there in a non-conference win over the Buckaroos from Pendleton High in Oregon.

Post Falls 69, University (WA) 0

The Trojans (3-1) rolled to the non-league win over the University Titans from Spokane, Washington.

Tevin Burns rushed for 160 yards and four touchdowns in the win.  Isaac McKeown, Devin Burton, Troy Ostlund and Caden Smith also scored rushing TDs, while McKeown found Alex Shields for a 15-yard score.  Kyle Miller also returned an interception 22 yards for a score.

CLASS 4A

Preston 53, Burley 51

Preston (2-3) earned the walk-off win over Burley (2-2) thanks to an 11-yard touchdown pass from Carter Perry to Kolter Moffitt as time expired.

The two sides traded leads four different times in the fourth quarter, with Burley seemingly getting the last laugh on a 45-yard TD pass from Mack Jensen to Sawyer Kondel with 40 seconds to play, momentarily giving the Bobcats a 51-47 advantage.  That set the stage for Preston’s game-winning drive, though.

Perry threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns (all in the fourth quarter) in the win.  Karson Winder added 123 yards rushing with four scores, and Jaxson Merrill led the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble.

Burley was led by Bodee Coombes, who scored five rushing touchdowns.

Hillcrest 36, Skyline 35

The Knights (2-0 High Country Conference, 4-0 overall) won on a Hail Mary as time expired, handing Skyline (0-1, 2-2) a stunning loss.

This was a back and forth affair.  Zyan Crockett opened the scoring for the Grizzlies on a one-yard run.  Skyline missed the point-after, though, and their 6-0 lead was short lived, as Hillcrest quarterback Peyton King broke off a 53-yard TD scamper.  Rylan Borgmann’s kick was through, and the Knights led 7-6.

Still in the first quarter, Skyline answered on a 53-yard pass from CarMyne Garcia to Hamilton Woodruff.  The Grizzlies went for two and couldn’t connect on the pass, leaving the Grizz lead at 12-7.  Hillcrest again responded, as King scored on a one-yard plunge to put the Knights back in front 13-12.

The Knights extended the lead in the second quarter when Braxton Battleson returned an interception 57 yards for a score.  King ran in the two-point conversion, and Hillcrest led at halftime 21-12.

It’s not easy to put away a three-time defending state champ like Skyline, though.  Amani Morel scored on a 47-yard run in the third quarter, and Alex Dennert’s PAT brought the Grizz to within 21-19.  Then, for the first time since the first quarter, Skyline had the lead, on a 16-yard run from Morel and two-point pass from Garcia to Woodruff.  Heading into the fourth quarter, the Grizz led 27-21.

Hillcrest responded, though, as Trason Keller capped off a long drive with a two-yard TD run, and Borgmann’s PAT gave the Knights a 28-27 lead.  It was short-lived, as Skyline struck gold again, this time on a 48-yard run from Crockett.  Garcia then hit Crockett for the two-point conversion, and the Grizz led 35-28.

Hillcrest, attempting a game-tying drive late, turned the ball over on downs after King was stopped on a run at Skyline’s 22-yard line with just 1:27 remaining.

The Grizzlies tried to run out the clock, and a lone first down would have clinched the win.  But Skyline was denied on three straight plays, so on fourth down, Skyline coach Scott Berger elected to have Crockett waste as much time off the clock as possible.  Crockett ran backwards 19 yards, taking 12 seconds off the clock, before stepping out of Skyline’s end zone for a safety with just six seconds to play.

Now trailing 35-30, Hillcrest returned the free kick to its own 45-yard line.  King’s first pass attempt into the flat fell incomplete, leaving just three seconds remaining.  That set the stage for Hillcrest’s Hail Mary, a 65-yard touchdown from Tyson Sweetwood to Isaac Davis for the winning touchdown as time expired.

Bonneville 22, Idaho Falls 19

A week after losing star running back Tim Williams to a season-ending leg injury, Bonneville (1-0 High Country, 3-1 overall) found a way to win a tight game over Idaho Falls (0-1, 1-3).

After a scoreless opening period, the Bees opened the scoring on an 11-yard shuffle pass touchdown from Kanyon Todd.  Todd’s run on the two-point try failed, and the Bees lead stood at 6-0.  Bonneville extended the advantage on a one-yard run from Todd, and this time, the two-point conversion was successful, leaving the lead at 14-0 at halftime.

Bonneville then struck immediately in the second half, as Keaton Trane returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 94 yards for a score.  Bonneville was denied on the two-point try, leaving the lead at 20-0.  Then, on Idaho Falls’ ensuing drive, Peter Molino was tackled in the end zone for a safety, extending Bonneville’s lead to 22-0.

Then the Tigers’ comeback attempt began.  With two minutes to play in the third, Bradley Elison hit Taylor Cardon on a six-yard pass for Idaho Falls’ first touchdown of the night.  The two-point pass failed, leaving the deficit at 22-6.

Then, with 5:28 remaining, Elison found Cardon again for a 27-yard score.  Idaho Falls again couldn’t convert the two-point conversion, leaving the score at 22-12.  Immediately after, the Tigers went for the onside kick and recovered.  From there, Elison threw a 19-yard touchdown to Tayson Kirkham.  Idaho Falls made the PAT, and trailed by three, 22-19.

After forcing a punt, the Tigers had one final possession with 1:23 to play.  Idaho Falls marched all the way to Bonneville’s 38-yard line, but a heave to the end zone as time expired fell incomplete, giving Bonneville the hard-earned win.

Vallivue 28, Columbia 27

The Southern Idaho Conference opener between Vallivue (1-0 SIC, 1-3 overall) and Columbia (0-1, 2-2) came down to a missed extra point by the Wildcats.

Columbia struck first with 5:49 to play in the opening quarter, as quarterback Jared Payne scored on a six-yard run.  The ‘Cats lead 7-0.

Vallivue answered with a nine-yard touchdown run from Austin Belnap, and with 11:39 to play in the second quarter, the game was tied at 7-7.

The Wildcats struck again on a 42-yard middle screen for a touchdown, but the extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 13-7 Columbia with 3:06 to play before halftime.

Valliuve answered just as quickly, as Isaac Moore threw a 26-yard TD to Lamar Davis with just 1:05 to play in the opening half.  The Falcons converted the PAT, and lead at halftime, 14-13.

The Falcons extended the lead on their opening drive of the third quarter, thanks to a 51-yard touchdown run from Onix Carson.  The PAT was again true, and Valliuve led 21-13 with 9:30 to play in the third.  Later in the period, Valliuve struck again on a 79-yard bomb from Moore to Austin Marler.  The PAT sailed through, and Valliuve led 28-13.

Columbia answered on a one-yard TD plunge from Payne, and after a penalty on Valliuve, Payne snuck in from the one-yard line to pick up the two-point conversion, leaving the deficit at 28-21.  Then, with 6:21 remaining in the fourth quarter, Payne scored on a three-yard run.  But in a cruel twist of fate, Columbia once again missed the extra point, leaving Vallivue with a slim 28-27 advantage.

Vallivue then bled nearly five minutes off the clock, but punted to Columbia with 1:07 to play.  But Payne threw an interception at Valliuve’s 50-yard line with just ten seconds to play, and the Falcons ran out the clock from there.

Skyview 35, Emmett 7

Skyview (2-0 SIC, 3-2 overall) stormed to a 35-0 lead and smothered Emmett (0-1, 3-1) in a Thursday night conference battle.

Melba 34, North Fremont 28

The Mustangs (3-0) handed North Fremont (3-1) their first loss of the season in a non-conference matchup hosted by Declo High School on Saturday.

North Fremont scored on their opening drive, but Melba quickly answered with back-to-back TDs to take a 13-8 lead after one quarter of play.  The two sides continued to trade blows before settling into a halftime score of 26-22 in favor of Melba.

The Huskies again found paydirt early in the third quarter to surge ahead 28-26, and the score remained that way until late in the contest.

With just over two minutes to play, Melba faced a fourth-and-goal from the North Fremont three-yard line.  Coach Cory Dickard decided to attempt a 20-yard field goal, which would have put Melba up by one.  Instead, North Fremont blocked the kick, but Melba's Brenden Svetich recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a stunning touchdown.  Melba converted the two-point conversion, and led 34-28.

North Fremont fumbled on their ensuing possession, and Melba ran out the clock from there.

The Grizzlies struck first on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Titus Vidlak to Jack Dressen.  Nampa Christian answered on a nine-yard pass from Aiden Thompson to Maiko Nevarez and a 7-7 tie midway through the second quarter.

Then, with less than a minute to play before halftime, Thompson caught a touchdown pass from Tyler Szilagyi.  The extra point was missed, and the Trojans led 13-7 at the half.

Fruitland struck again on a five-yard touchdown run by Joshua Proctor midway through the third quarter, giving the Grizzlies a 14-13 lead.  On Nampa Christian’s next possession, Thompson threw a 36-yard touchdown to Hunter Hafer.  Matthew Nevarez ran in the two-point conversion, and the Trojans led 21-14 at the end of the third.

Fruitland again ansered, opening the fourth quarter with a nine-yard TD run by Vidlak, tying the game at 21-21.

Nampa Christian was poised to break the tie following a lengthy, time-consuming drive, but was turned over on downs by the Fruitland defense at the goal line.  After the Grizzlies took over, though, Vidlak was sacked in the end zone and fumbled.  Addison Taylor recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown.

Fruitland had one final chance at the win, but turned the ball over on downs.
