We just finished the first week of regular season play for high school volleyball in Idaho.  This season started out with a bang and gave us a little preview as to what's ahead as there were six tournaments held in the first week, featuring over thirty Idaho teams.

The tournaments included:

Serving Up Sky View Tournament in Utah
New Plymouth Invitational
Kuna Kavemen Klassic
Judy Fong Memorial Tournament in Lewiston
Cokeville Invitaitonal in Wyoming
and Peg Peterson Memorial Tournament in Pocatello

The annual Peg Peterson Tournament is proudly hosted by Highland High and always brings top teams to southeast Idaho to compete in a rigorous two-day tournament.

This year, we saw top teams from various classifications earn their way to the Gold Bracket.  The Gold Bracket featured challenge after challenge and ultimately, it was Canyon Ridge who came out on top.  The Riverhawks took the long way around to the championship after their first game resulted in a tight loss to Madison's JV, so in true double elimination fashion, Canyon Ridge had to beat Highland twice in the championship round.

Canyon Ridge is led by Abby McClain and Maddie Bland.  These strong seniors never gave up and let their experience and aggressive competitiveness led them to the final.  This team has many senior leaders this season and they are ready and willing to go to work and navigate past the adversity that lies ahead.  The Riverhawks earned the Peg Peterson trophy for the first time ever!

Snake River and Kimberly got to battle and we feel strongly that these two are sure to meet again down the road this season.  Both teams displayed strong performances in the Gold Bracket as well.

Pocatello and Skyline also got to battle Canyon Ridge the weekend and both portrayed glimpses of what is to come and how all Class 4A teams are in for a fight this year.

Up north, Lewiston hosted a fierce tournament championship at the Judy Fong Memorial Tournament, where more quality teams faced off.  The two championship entrants don't compete against one another in the regular season, as they are from very different populations.  Troy is the two-time defending 1AD1 champion, and they went against 5A Coeur d'Alene High.

The Vikings earned the 'ship by going undefeated on Saturday, and they even took down the powerhouse from Troy in the final.  Paisley Goings and Gia Janke led the way with over 50 combined kills for the day.  Coeur d'Alene was resilient with the serve-receive and their ball control kept them ahead in each set of the day.

There was so much action just in the first week of the season!  We can't wait to see the match ups this week and see more amazing action all over the state!
