According to United States population estimates for 2022, the Gem State of Idaho ranked #38 with just under two million residence (pop. 1,939,033). Considering our small population size, the sport of wrestling in Idaho is advancing and performing very well at the national prep level. Per capita, I believe Idaho is among the top small states in the country for prep wrestling. For instance, since 2021, Idaho has produced a state record number of All-American honors at the Fargo Nationals in Freestyle and Greco-Roman and with the recent performances at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals has brought home nearly 100 All-American honors in the last three years (sum total –  all age group divisions).

Unquestionably, Idaho is producing a significant number of Gems each year (a handful being Hidden Gems) and in return college level coaches are taking notice. With this in mind, the probability of a high school wrestler advancing to the collegiate level is much less than many would perceive. According to a 2020 study performed by the NCAA (estimated probability study for all high school sports), just over 1% of high school wrestlers (boys) in the United States continue their mat careers at the NCAA Division I level; whereas, the remaining divisions are slightly less or greater than (NCAA Division II: < 1.0% / NCAA Division III: 1.2% / NAIA: <1.0%). The statistical numbers in the girl’s division are in the same neighborhood, but due to recent growth trends, the statistical number oftentimes fluctuates.

If we take into account that as of 2022 there were just over 400 colleges in the United States that sponsored men’s varsity wrestling (Within the 5 divisions – DI, DII, DIII, NAIA, and NJCAA), the probability of receiving a scholarship in any of the five divisions is extremely low (as indicated by the statistics listed above), but not beyond one’s reach pending they are motivated to work hard and commit to the demanding process to excel to the next level. Furthermore, the woman’s division has nearly 150 programs offering wrestling and with recent growth trends at the grassroot and prep levels is expected to expand college opportunities in the future years to come. The following is a breakdown of the collegiate level programs offering varsity wrestling in both the men’s and women’s divisions (According to the National Wrestling Coaches Associate site – 2023):

COLLEGIATE LEVEL PROGRAMS BY DIVISION (Men/Women)

  • NCAA DIVISION I – 80 (M) / 4 (W)
  • NCAA DIVISION II – 72 (M )/32 (W)
  • NCAA DIVISION III – 121 (M) /50 (W)
  • NAIA – 77 (M) / 45 (W)
  • NJCAA – 57 (M) / 18 (W)

TOTALS: 407 (M) / 149 (W) *

*Does not include the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) club programs.

Sports performance metrics are key to overall athletic and program development and a means to measure progress. A few that come to mind include quantity, quality, effectiveness, and learning development. One metric in particular that has stood out to me is the number of All-Americans being produced annually by the Gem State at national age group competitions, such as the USAW Folkstyle and Fargo Nationals. Based on historical data, Idaho has statistically been on an upward trajectory for the past few years (prior to 2020, Idaho on average produced 13 All-Americans per year at Fargo). Case and point, since 2021, the Gem State has produced a total of 93 All-American honors at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals (sum of all age group divisions), along with winning several state team titles in the process. Additionally, in the last two years, Idaho has produced a total of 45 All-Americans at Fargo (state record 24 All-Americans in 2021) and this past summer placed in the top 5 in both the Junior Freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions (Note – Team Idaho placed 4th in the 16U Greco-Roman division in 2021 – Highest finish ever).

The clear-cut metric that stands out even more to me is the recent number of Idaho wrestlers committing to top programs in the NCAA Division I. This year alone, 12 out of the 32 wrestlers in the boy’s division (West Region – 21, Midwest Region – 6, Southern Region – 2, Northeast Region – 3) already committed to compete at the next level are headed to the Division I (38%). Considering our small population size, this is a very impressive per capita statistic and a testament to the hard work and commitment by many coaches, volunteers, and parents in Idaho, who have dedicated their lives to grow wrestling in the Gem State. All the more reason for the administration at Boise State to consider reinstating the storied Division I program (6x PAC 10/12 Team Champions – 2 individual NCAA Champions – Combined 30 NCAA All-American honors), in addition to our state exploring the possibilities of starting a new program to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Let’s take a closer look at the NAIA in the sport of wrestling. First, the NAIA has experienced steady growth in both the men’s and women’s divisions for the last two decades and to date has done an outstanding job growing college wrestling opportunities nationwide, especially in states where college programs never existed or had been discontinued in the recent past (e.g., Title IX). If we take into account the popularity of prep wrestling in Idaho, our state’s recent performances on the national stage (Fargo/USAW Folkstyle Nationals), as well as the high volume of college commits and current number of wrestlers on a college roster throughout the country (see diagram), these reasons alone support the case to explore the possibilities of starting a new NAIA program in the Gem State.

Take for instance, the College of Idaho (COI) in Caldwell. Not only is this college in a great location logistically (greater Boise Metropolitan), it also neighbors several colleges in the western United States that compete in the NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC), which for wrestling fields many programs (see list below). Currently, the athletic program at COI offers 22 varsity sports (10 men’s/12 women’s) and is a member of the CCC. If we take into account the location, logistics, strength of college wrestling in the CCC, and the growth of wrestling at the prep level in Idaho, it makes a lot of sense to explore the possibilities of adding both a men’s and women’s program at COI.

According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), the sport of wrestling in the CCC fields 12 men’s and 7 women’s programs in the region. They include:

  • Arizona Christian
  • Corban University (Oregon)
  • Eastern Oregon University*
  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical (Arizona)
  • Evergreen University (Washington)*
  • Menlo College (California)*
  • MSU-Northern (Montana)
  • University of Providence (Montana)*
  • Simpson University (California)*
  • Southern Oregon*
  • Vanguard University (California)*
  • Warner Pacific University (Oregon)

*Offers both men’s and women’s wrestling programs.

This year’s talented group of Idaho wrestlers who have recently committed to compete at the collegiate level along with those already competing all have one thing in common. To put it simply, they are fully committed to excel to the highest levels of the sport, dedicated to the process, and prepared to put their reputation on the line against the best competition in the country. This alone sets them apart from the average competitor. Additionally, the girl’s division has witnessed an upward trajectory since first being sanctioned with the boys in 2022 and to already have 11 girls commit (West Region – 4, Midwest Region – 5, Southern Region – 2) is remarkable and a testament to the commitment by many to grow women’s wrestling in Idaho. Be that as it may, it does not surprise me considering the strong wrestling culture that has been established and the number of young wrestlers gravitating to it. It reminds of the famous line in the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come.”  Well, in Idaho, the wrestling environment and setting has been built and many have arrived to train, work extremely hard, embrace the process, and test their potential against the nation’s elite.

One example is the Best on Best training conducted bi-weekly in the Treasure Valley by Idaho USA Wrestling Director, Chris Owens. I’ve attended many of these training sessions and the norm is to have at least 7 to 10 All-Americans in the room training together along with many up and coming talent. Another example is the ALL-IN Academy run by former Boise State alumni Levi Jones, which attracts a lot of grassroots level kids receiving advanced technique and instruction. There are many more examples throughout Idaho that I have not had the opportunity to observe or highlight in my writings, but am aware is happening in the three regions of the state (more to follow). According to Ponch Aleman, whose son Marcus is a freshman and state finalist from Fruitland High School, “We have been a part of the Idaho Wrestling Community/Family for about 11 years now. My son has trained in different rooms with different skill sets, but I’ve never seen the wrestling craze I am seeing now! Marcus currently trains with Levi Jones at ALL IN Wrestling Academy…Rooms like that and Chris Owen’s Best on Best practices is the best thing that could be happening for wrestlers trying to become better at what they love to do! You can get multiple Fargo finalist, All-Americans, and State Champions all in one room…Sky is the limit! High level wrestling rooms like that is so important to the Valley. We are truly grateful! Best is yet to come!”

In summary, the growth of wrestling at the grassroot and prep levels in the Gem State has been an all hands on deck effort by many throughout the state and the aspirations to build a strong wrestling culture is materializing and gaining strength as I write this article. The proof is in the strong performances at Fargo, USAW Folkstyle Nationals, and many other national level competitions. If any young wrestler in Idaho has a dream of competing at the highest levels, it’s possible in the Gem State. Furthermore, another strong leading indicator is the volume of college commits in addition to the large number of Idaho wrestlers already competing for college programs nationwide. This statistic is very impressive and supports the argument that the administration at Boise State consider reinstating their storied program (discontinued on April 18, 2017), as well as the powers that be in Idaho explore the possibilities of starting a new NAIA program. The demand is high! We are ONE IDAHO and the sky is the limit to our state’s potential.

Below is a list of Idaho wrestlers/accolades, who have recently committed to compete at the collegiate level in 2023 (new additions highlighted in blue). This group of 43 commits is represented in the three regions of Idaho (see diagram 2023 College Commits – Hometowns); Boise Metro (51%), Northern (16%), and Southeast (33%). Additionally, I reviewed every college level roster from each of the five divisions, NCWA Club teams (via the NWCA site), and provide a tally of all the Idaho wrestlers listed during the 2022 – ’23 season. On top of that, I compiled a long list of historical collegiate level All-Americans from Idaho dating back to the early 1960s (All divisions). If I have missed anyone, please bring this information to my attention by emailing brandon@idahosports.com.
