It’s time for this week’s edition of Heavy Hitters. Every Monday, we'll recap the nine most scintillating hitting performances from the past week of competition.
Why nine? Because there's nine batters in the lineup.
I should note that these are single-game performances only. I don't have the math skills to pull off calculating weekly totals.
If you'd like to nominate an athlete for our Heavy Hitters list, send an email to brandon@idahosports.com.
With that said, here's our list of Idaho baseball's Heavy Hitters, from the week of May 1st to May 6th. The performances will be listed in chronological order.
1. Eli Hinds, So, Prairie
The race to the top of the Whitepine League this year has been fun to watch, as several quality teams have jostled for top positioning. Count Prairie among those teams, after an 11-10 win over Clearwater Valley on Tuesday, May 2nd, kept their hopes of a regular season conference title alive. Hinds went 2-for-4, but both of his hits were doubles. He ended up with five RBIs and three runs scored, as he also reached base on a walk and a Rams error.
2. Toby Elliott, Sr, Lewiston
Lewiston shutout Post Falls in Inland Empire League play 17-0 on Tuesday, May 2nd. Taylor hit two home runs in the win, and finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
3. Braden Crystal, Jr, Hillcrest
The Knights pulled off a first round upset over Idaho Falls during their first round series against the Tigers at the High County Conference Tournament on Tuesday, May 2nd. After taking Game One of the best-of-three series, the Knights left no doubt in a 22-10 bludgeoning in Game Two. The hero of Game Two was Crystal, who drove in six runs as part of a 4-for-4 day at the plate. Crystal also scored all four times he reached base.
4. Garrett Nelson, Jr, Kimberly
Nelson got the call to start on the pitcher’s mound in Kimberly’s postseason opener: a 16-3 first round win over Filer at the Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference Tournament on Wednesday, May 3rd. The best way to ensure you get the run support you need on the mound? Take care of it yourelf at the plate. Nelson did just that, finishing 2-for-2 with two singles, two sacrifice flies, four RBIs and two runs scored.
5. Dylan Brown, Jr, Cole Valley Christian
The Chargers broke out the bats during a 30-16 win over New Plymouth in Western Idaho Conference play on Wednesday, May 3rd. Brown came to the plate seven times, drew two walks, and went 5-for-5 otherwise. Brown drove in five runs, and scored five times himself.
6. Burton Park, Sr, Firth
Park drove in six runs during Firth’s 21-1 win over Salmon in the opening round of the Nuclear Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 5th. Park finished 2-for-3, scored two runs, stole two bases, and was also hit by a pitch.
7. Braxton Gamett, Jr, Challis-Mackay
The Rivercats have added athletes from Butte County High School this year as well, and Gamett, an Arco product, helped Challis-Mackay keep its season alive with a 21-1 win over Salmon in a loser out game at the Nuclear Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 5th. Gamett went 2-for-3 with a triple, a hit by pitch, four RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.
8. Jack Boudrero, Sr, Rigby
In an 18-2 win over Madison in a loser out game of the High Country Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 5th, Boudrero went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a single. He drove in six runs, scored twice himself, and also logged a sacrifice fly.
9. Deagon Edgar, Sr, Declo
The Hornets wrapped up the Canyon Conference championship and a spot at the 2A State Baseball Tournament with a tight 2-1 win over Wendell on Thursday, May 5th. Edgar was responsible for both of Declo’s runs, finishing 1-for-3 with a well-placed, two-run double in the top of the first inning. That 2-0 lead held up the rest of the way as the Hornets clinched a spot at state.
