Monday's statewide basketball schedule was light overall, with only nine games total taking place between girls' and boys' varsity contests.
But that didn't stop IdahoSports.com from bringing you a "Treasure Valley Game Night" broadcast, as Cascade traveled to Garden Valley in a girls-boys doubleheader.
The Garden Valley boys delivered an 81-70 win, moving their overall record to 10-5, their Long Pin Conference record to 5-1, and a return to the Idaho Boys Basketball Daily Top 25 rankings.
Garden Valley is currently ranked fourth among Class 1AD2 teams, just ahead of league rival Council.
The real-life standings, however, reflect the fact that the Lumberjacks defeated the Wolverines on December 16th by a 61-52 margin. Council is still unbeaten in league play at 6-0, and also boast a 9-4 overall mark.
Garden Valley will worry about Council on Saturday, January 21st, when they travel to the Lumberjacks' gym for a rematch. For now, they can revel in the fact that they swept the regular season series against Cascade, the preseason pick to win the Long Pin Conference.
Between last night's win and a 63-44 triumph on January 7th, Garden Valley is essentially two games up on Cascade in the league standings. For a league that will receive two bids to state, that's huge.
In Monday night's win over Cascade, the Wolverines raced out to a 41-19 halftime lead, then withstood a furious Ramblers comeback attempt in the second half.
Trayson Corn earned IdahoSports.com Player of the Game honors with a steady 17 points. 12 of his 17 came after halftime, as his effort helped stymie the Cascade comeback.
Corn starts for Garden Valley, along with Trevor Corn, Tacoma Kelly, Gavin Kelly and Zade Thompson. The bench is led by Kaden Zimmer and a pair of freshmen, Max Yearsley and Madix Miller.
It's an impressive blend of athletes and interchangeable parts. Any of those eight players are capable of leading the Wolverines on any given night.
Garden Valley returns to action on Thursday, January 19th against Meadows Valley. Then comes Saturday's showdown in Council.
