Burley took on Spring Creek, Nevada at the East Idaho Holiday Shootout at Idaho Falls High School (ORDER GAME PHOTOS)

With the start of a new year upon us, and several holiday basketball tournaments officially in the rearview mirror, I thought it would be interesting to take stock of how Idaho teams are stacking up this season against out-of-state opponents.

Every night, we update our scoreboard on IdahoSports.com, and throughout the season, on the surface, it seemed to me that Idaho schools were having a lot of success against teams from other states.

So, I crunched the numbers.  What did I find?  With the exception of one state to the south of us, Idaho has held up exceptionally well this year, and could lay claim to being the Best of the West this year in hoops.

Idaho's girls and boys basketball teams have piled up a 64% winning percentage against non-Idaho teams this year.  Their overall record against out-of-state opponents is 176-99.

Don't just take my word for it, though.  Here's a state-by-state breakdown, listed in alphabetical order.

LOSSES

Girls:

Inderkum 67, Owyhee 66
Pasadena 53, Canyon Ridge 50
Rancho Christian 70, Owyhee 67
San Marcos 61, Canyon Ridge 54

Idaho's girls are 10-3 against the state of California.  Owyhee went to the Glendora Winter Tournament and came away with the championship, while Century performed well at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.  Lake City split a pair of California contests at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, and Thunder Ridge, Rocky Mountain and Timberline all swept Whitney High at last week's TimberLion Tournament.

The boys were slightly worse at 10-4.  Owyhee just went 2-2 at The Classic at Damien, while Vallivue went 3-1 at the same tournament.  Coeur d'Alene and Mountain View also performed well at the Tarkanian Classic.

Canada

1-0 (1.000)

WINS

Boys:

Mountain View 66, St. George's 55

LOSSES

None

The Mountain View boys earned a tidy win over Vancouver, British Columbia's St. George's School at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

Colorado

2-0 (1.000)

WINS

Girls:

Coeur d'Alene 46, Fountain Fort Carson 29

Boys:

Mountain View 74, Pueblo Central 42

LOSSES

None

Coeur d'Alene's girls and Mountain View's boys each picked up a win against a Colorado school at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

Florida

0-1 (.000)

WINS

None

LOSSES

Boys:

Jones 60, Coeur d'Alene 56

Coeur d'Alene dropped a tight contest against Orlando's Jones High at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.  Idaho's chances against the Sunshine State could improve at the end of January, when the Owyhee boys travel to a tournament hosted by Montverde Academy.

Hawaii

1-2 (.333)

WINS

Boys:

Sandpoint 40, Mid-Pacific Institute 38

LOSSES

Boys:

Kamehameha 57, Sandpoint 53
Iolani 36, Sandpoint 33

The Sandpoint boys just had the trip of a lifetime, traveling to Honolulu for the Punahou Invitational.  After a narrow win over Mid-Pacific Institute in their opener, the Bulldogs dropped two contests against Hawaii schools by a combined total of seven points.

Montana

8-2 (.800)

WINS

Girls:

Clark Fork 38, Noxon 28
Leadore 60, Lima 29
Salmon 54, Darby 34
Salmon 45, Darby 40

Boys:

Bonners Ferry 66, Stillwater Christian 60
Clark Fork 70, Noxon 37
Leadore 53, Lima 36
Salmon 57, Darby 52

LOSSES

Girls:

Lima defeated Clark County

Boys:

Darby 56, Salmon 49

Montana teams rarely venture out of state, so Idaho's opportunities have been limited.  But in the few matchups between the neighbors this year, it's decidedly tilted towards the Gem State.  Idaho's boys and girls have each gone 5-1 against Treasure State opponents.  The lone losses?  Lima defeated Clark County in girls action, while Darby defeated Salmon by seven in a boys contest.  The Savages exacted revenge in the rematch, though, winning by five.

Nevada

12-4 (.750)

WINS

Girls:

Century 60, Las Vegas 39
Hagerman 33, Jackpot 27
Hagerman 37, Jackpot 31

Boys:

Canyon Ridge 52, Chaparral 43
Coeur d'Alene 65, Foothill 61
Hagerman 33, Jackpot 27
Hagerman 38, Jackpot 22
Idaho Falls 73, Spring Creek 49
Mountain Home 47, Spring Creek 41

LOSSES

Girls:

Wendover 51, Hagerman 9
West Wendover 61, Hagerman 17

Boys:

Lund 28, Hagerman 22
Spring Creek 73, Burley 61

The Idaho boys are 6-2 against Nevada foes this year.  Hagerman has defeated Jackpot twice; once at the WREC Classic in Wells, and once in a true road game at Jackpot High.  Nevada's Spring Creek High went 1-2 at last week's East Idaho Holiday Shootout, losing to Idaho Falls and Mountain Home, but picking up a win over Burley.  And Canyon Ridge and Coeur d'Alene both earned wins over Nevada squads at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

Idaho's girls are right behind at 5-2 against the Silver State.  Hagerman has split against Nevada squads this year,  Century defeated Las Vegas High at the Tarkanian Classic in the Sin City, and Pocatello and Snake River both defeated Elko at last week's East Idaho Holiday Shootout.

North Carolina

0-1 (.000)

WINS

None

LOSSES

Girls:

Cannon 64, Lake City 62

It's not often that Lake City's girls lose, but they did so twice at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.  Their second loss, to Concord's Cannon School, stung a little harder, as the Timberwolves had a chance to win but couldn't close out the contest.

Idaho's boys have dominated their Oregonian brethren, boasting a 34-10 overall record.  Oregon's Ontario High has seen the worst of it, as the Tigers are 0-10 against Idaho squads.  The ten losses have come against ten different teams as well.  New Plymouth is 3-0 against Vale this year, with two regular season wins plus a victory at last week's Truckstop.com Tournament.  Oregon's best squad this year might be Baker High, as the Bulldogs have earned wins over Fruitland, Homedale and Twin Falls.  The only two Idaho teams to defeat Baker this year?  Pocatello and Lapwai, which could serve as an indicator about how good the Thunder and Wildcats could be this year.

The Idaho girls trail by one game overall against Oregon, sporting a 13-14 record against their neighbors.  Weiser is 2-0 against Oregon with two lopsided wins, while Fruitland is 3-2 overall against Oregon teams.  Oregon is boosted by Nyssa's 5-0 record and tournament victory at their own Nyssa Christmas Tournament.  Baker High is also 4-0 against Idaho with home-and-home sweeps of both Fruitland and Homedale.

This is the only state that Idaho has a sub-.500 record against (with at least five games played).  Idaho's girls are 8-11 against the state of Utah this year, with Millville's Ridgeline High owning a 4-0 record against some of East Idaho's best squads.  Soda Springs went to an early season tournament and went 2-1, and Century defeated Salt Lake City's West High at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas last month.

Idaho's boys are also three games below .500 at 15-18 against the Beehive State.  Hillcrest and Madison both went to the season opening Corner Canyon Tournament of Champions and had wildly different experiences; the Knights went 3-0 while Madison finished 0-3.  Meridian and Eagle each went 1-2 at the Carl Ingersoll Classic in American Fork, while Utah's Bear River and Salem Hills performed well at the Preston Indian Classic and East Idaho Holiday Shootout, respectively.  Preston is one of the few Idaho teams with success against Utah, sporting a 4-1 record.  Their lone loss came by one point to Syracuse.

Idaho's girls basketball teams have simply dazzled against Washingtonians, posting a 32-6 record overall this year.  Timberlake's girls have done the heavy lifting, sporting a perfect 8-0 record against Washington opponents.  The Post Falls girls are 5-0 against their neighbors, and won the GESA Winter Shootout in East Wenatchee in mid-December.  Lakeland is also 5-0 against Washington, including two wins at last week's East Valley Holiday Classic in Spokane.

The boys side has been more even, as Washington holds a slight edge on Idaho.  The Gem State is 17-18 against Washington boys basketball teams this year.  Lake City is 4-0 against Washington, and has taken home titles from Spokane's The Fitz Tournament and the Curtis Winter Classic in University Place.  On the Washington side, the Pullman Greyounds are 4-0 against Idaho this year, while Spokane's West Valley High is 3-0.

Wyoming is yet another state that has struggled with Idaho's best this year.  Bear Lake went 3-0 at the Flaming Gorge Classic in Green River, while Ririe did the same at the Bridger Valley Tournament.  Grace and West Side each went 2-1 at the Flaming Gorge, with their losses coming against opponents three classifications above them.  The one standout appears to be Star Valley's boys.  They earned wins over Burley and Centennial at last week's East Idaho Holiday Shootout.
