Capital
Two years ago, in 2009, Capital was the team to beat in 5A. They were already penciled in on many brackets as the state champions before taking the field against the Eagle Mustangs on that cold November Saturday on the Blue Turf. The game was considered a formality. Then the infamous two-point conversion heard round the world and the Dream Season was over for Capital, losing in the final seconds, 22-21.
In 2010, Capital came out strong again, making it all the way to the state semi-final round where they played eventual champions, CDA. They fought a good fight, but eventually lost a close game 28-24.
Now it is 2011, and the Capital Eagles are staring down the CDA Vikings, once again, in the semi-final round. After losing their first two games of the season (to Centennial and Eagle) the Eagles ran the table the rest of the season. Their reward? They have to travel to CDA this time, and that is a long bus ride. It is going to be cold and it is going to be miserable, but one thing Capital has that CDA can’t afford to forget about it is revenge. They want payback, not only for the loss CDA handed them last year, but for the loss to Eagle in the championship game in 2009. They know what it is like to be number one only to be knocked off by the underdog. They have two years of state tournament frustration waiting to be released and that emotion Is a powerful thing.
CDA
Last year, CDA rolled over Centennial in the Kibbie Dome 28-7 to claim the 5A state crown. As the final whistle echoed away and sport seasons changed from football to basketball and wrestling, the players who would be returning made a goal to be back in the state championship the next November, either at BSU or at Holt Arena – it didn’t matter.
An army is more confident being led in to battle by George Patton than by Pee-Wee Herman. The CDA Vikings’ Gen. Patton comes in the unassuming form of their hometown hero, QB Chad Challich. Considered by many to be one of the best QB’s to ever play football in Idaho, Challich brings more to his team than just his impressive skills. The confidence he instills in his teammates turns good players into great players, and great players in to champions.
CDA has a team that is stacked with talent on both sides of the ball. The fact they have one of the best QB’s this state has ever seen is a bonus. A bonus that will lead then straight in to the 5A state championship game next weekend to defend their 5A state title.
