Behind the late-game heroics of Brigham Permann, the Rockland Bulldogs boys basketball team lifted the first place trophy for the first time in school history with a 53-51 victory over Camas County in the 1AD2 State Championship Game.
Permann scored 22 points, and got stronger as the game went later. He went 7-of-10 from the floor, and a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance. But his most important contribution came at the free throw line, where his 5-of-7 performance helped seal the game late.
Permann sank two free throws with 8.5 seconds remaining to break a 51-51 tie, and the Rockland defense closed it out from there.
It took both teams a while to warm up, as Camas County held an 8-4 lead after one. Everyone found their footing in the second quarter, and Camas County took a slim 19-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Neither side found much breathing room in the second half, as the title affair turned into a back-and-forth battle.
A 6-2 run by Camas to start the fourth quarter put Rockland back on their heels, but the Bulldogs began to heat up from the three-point line, as JT Parrish, Permann, and Dylan Merritt all sank long distance attempts.
A foul underneath with 22.9 seconds to play sent Camas County's Dawson Kramer to the line for two free throws. He hit both, and tied the game at 51-51.
On Rockland's possession, Permann drove to the basket on the right side. Palan stood in to take the charge, but was called for the block instead with 8.5 seconds to play. Permann knocked down both foul shots, and Rockland grabbed the 53-51 lead.
On the Mushers' final possession, Camas County never got a good shot attempt, and their hurried three-point shot as time expired was blocked, sending the Bulldogs into a frenzied celebration.
Rockland made 6-of-11 from three as a team, while Camas County went just 3-of-17. Breken Clarke finished his Camas County career with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds.
