Lakeland vs. Preston

The trip from Rathdrum to Preston is just over 600 miles.  So the two schools came up with a neat idea: meet somewhere in the middle.  The two schools will play at Montana Tech University in Butte, Montana.  Lakeland has big plans this year, with senior quarterback Devon Suko and senior wide receiver Alden Waddington both returning.  Preston just missed the playoffs last year and will try to correct that in 2021.


Century at Minico

The Minico Spartans were voted the favorite in the Great Basin Conference preseason coaches’ poll.  Junior Brevin Trenkle moves from quarterback to running back, and will also spearhead the Minico defense at linebacker.  Century is a program with a new head coach (Logan Horrocks) and almost all new players.  McKean Romriell at quarterback and Air Force commit Bruin Fleischmann at wide receiver are the only returning starters for Century this year.


Rocky Mountain at Highland
6:30 PM Saturday

These teams met in the Class 5A quarterfinals a year ago.  Rocky Mountain won 29-13 on their way to the 5A championship.  But a lot of talented players graduated, and the Grizzlies’ depth was further affected by the opening of brand new Owyhee High.  Highland was also hit hard by graduation, but have the advantage of playing inside the friendly confines of Holt Arena for this matchup.  Rocky Mountain wide receiver C.J. Jacobsen will match wits with Highland cornerback Adam Jones in what should be a compelling battle all game long.


Boys Soccer

Post Falls at Coeur d’Alene

These bitter Inland Empire League rivals square off in a conference game to kick off their season.  Post Falls won the district tournament a year ago, while Coeur d’Alene is trying to break through in 2021.


Lake City at Sandpoint
4:30 PM Friday

The Timberwolves will travel north to face Sandpoint in a match that will count in the conference standings as part of the new combined 5A/4A Inland Empire League.  Sandpoint is the defending champ from the 4A IEL.


Centennial at Bishop Kelly
6:00 PM Friday

The Patriots had a shot at winning the consolation final at last year’s 5A state tournament, but the game was cancelled due to weather.  They’ll play Bishop Kelly in what should be an interesting season opener.


Boise at Owyhee
7:00 PM Friday

The defending 5A champion Brave will open the season against Owyhee, which will be playing its first match in school history.  The Brave return some talented players from last year’s squad, while Owyhee is a relative unknown.  This contest will not count towards the conference standings.


Thunder Ridge at Blackfoot
11:00 AM Saturday

Each of these squads finished as state runner-up in 2020.  Thunder Ridge fell to Boise in the 5A championship, while Blackfoot was bested by Vallivue in the 4A final.  Both teams are eager to reverse their fortunes in 2021.


Rocky Mountain at Vallivue

Speaking of Vallivue, the Falcons open their 2021 title defense against 5A Rocky Mountain, a state tournament participant a year ago.  This will be a good opening test for Vallivue.


Firth at American Falls
1:00 PM Saturday

American Falls won Class 3A’s District 5 tournament a year ago, and will open their season against Firth.  For the Cougars, it will be their second match in as many days after they play Teton on Friday.


Girls Soccer

Lone Peak, UT at Rocky Mountain
10:30 AM Friday

The defending 5A champs from Rocky Mountain will welcome in a non-Idaho opponent to start their season.  Lone Peak began playing two weeks ago and already sport a 3-0 record.


Coeur d’Alene at Post Falls
4:30 PM Friday

The Vikings and Trojans will square off right away in a game that will count towards the Inland Empire League standings.  Both of these teams are trying to break through in 2021 after Lake City was the IEL champ in 2020.


Preston at Hillcrest
4:30 PM Friday

The defending 4A champs from Preston begin their title defense with a road trip to Ammon to play the Knights.  Hillcrest could be an up-and-coming team in the High Country Conference this year.


Owyhee at Middleton
6:00 PM Friday

The Owyhee Storm will play their first match in school history against a tough Middleton squad from the 4A Southern Idaho Conference.


Lone Peak, UT at Boise
10:30 AM Saturday

A day after playing defending 5A champ Rocky Mountain, Lone Peak High from Utah will face the 5A runner-up from last year, Boise.  The Brave appear to be stacked again in 2021, so this will be a great early test for them.


Teton at Marsh Valley
11:00 AM Saturday

The Eagles took fourth at state a year ago, and are aiming for a higher finish in 2021.  They’ll open their season by hosting a Teton squad that could make some noise in District 6.


Moscow at Lakeland
12:00 PM Saturday

The Bears won the Inland Empire League in 2021, and will have to travel to Rathdrum to play a conference foe in their season opener.  This match could set an early tone for how things might play out in the IEL this year.
