We decided to highlight some of the matchups that stood out to us on first glance.
Kimberly at Snake River – Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m.
Two of the premier running backs in the 3A classification line up across the field in this one, with Treyton Young (Snake River) and McKade Huft (Kimberly) both entering their senior campaigns. The Panthers had a down year by their standards in 2018 and will be looking to kick the new season off on the right foot against the Bulldogs, who went 10-2 and made a trip to the state semifinals a year ago.
Fruitland at South Fremont – Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m.
This serves as a good measuring stick for both teams right out of the chutes. Last season Fruitland won on its home field by a 43-14 score over the Cougars, who will be looking to enact some revenge this time around.
Fruitland at Gooding – Friday, September 6 at 7 p.m.
Ryan Tracy and the Grizzlies will challenge themselves as much as anybody with their non-conference slate this year, traveling to South Fremont and Gooding and playing home games against Cole Valley Christian, Middleton and Declo. The same can also be said for Gooding and Cameron Andersen, who has his team set to host Parma, Fruitland and Snake River, with road contests at Weiser and Caldwell. These teams like to test each other early and often in their scheduling.
Gooding at Weiser – Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
Again, we go back to the fact that Gooding likes to challenge itself. Weiser is expected to continue to be on the rise in year two under Tom Harrison and will enter the season as one of the favorites in the 3A SRV this year. An intriguing matchup in this one will be Gooding quarterback Shane Jennings against Weiser safety Brett Spencer. Spencer impressed as a freshman last year on defense and could also see heavy reps at quarterback in 2019.
Homedale at Fruitland – Friday, September 27 at 7 p.m.
After a second place finish at state a year ago, Homedale gets 3A SRV play underway by heading to Fruitland. With running back Mason Kincheloe and a host of others having graduated for the Trojans, look for quarterback Daniel Uranga to shoulder a heavier workload this season. Last year Homedale opened eyes throughout the state with a 34-0 blanking of the Grizzlies.
Fruitland at Weiser – Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
This game was close in 2018 and should be again as the Wolverines look to knock off their rivals for the first time since 2005, a span of 15 consecutive games. Last season Fruitland won 21-14.
Timberlake at Bonners Ferry – Friday, October 11 at 7 p.m.
One of the big surprises throughout the state a year ago was Timberlake making a run to the semifinals. A strong core of that group is back for 17th year head coach Roy Albertson, including Joey Follini, Jeremy McLemore, Jacob James, Louis Powell and Josh Yanez. Bonners Ferry hasn’t won against the White Tigers since 2005, however it is never easy playing in the most northern location in Idaho. The Badgers have some young talent ready to come up through the program and a new head coach leading the way.
South Fremont at Sugar-Salem – Friday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
Over the last five years each of the Cold War battles have been decided by two touchdowns or less, with the defending state champion Diggers boasting a 3-2 edge in that time span, including a 27-13 victory last season. Sugar-Salem returns 3A State Player of the Year Tanner Harris at quarterback and has a nice assortment of skill position talent coming back alongside of him, which should keep this group as one of the classification favorites again this year. The Diggers also have quality non-conference action against Declo, Shelley, Star Valley (WY) and Marsh Valley this season.
Weiser at Homedale – Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
Both of these teams are expected to make playoff runs this year and this final week pairing could very well turn out to be pivotal for deciding an SRV champion.
Gooding at Kimberly – Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
Kimberly and Gooding have had some fantastic battles over the course of the last three years, with the three games all having been decided by eight points or less. The expectation has turned into this game being for the conference championship on a yearly basis.
South Fremont at Teton – Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m.
It seems feasible that three of the top teams in the state could come out of the Mountain Rivers Conference this year, however just two will get spots at state with the elimination of the at-large in the 3A ranks. That means that the loser of this game could potentially be eliminated entirely depending on what happens with both of these teams in their respective games against Sugar-Salem.
