Enjoy football fans....
Last week:
The Centennial Patriots continued to gain steam and moved into the No. 2 spot in the 5A SIC Division 2 race with a convincing 42-12 win over Vallivue.
The Shelley Russets kept their 4A High Country Conference title hopes alive with a thrilling 22-21 win over rival Blackfoot when Aaron Adams scored the touchdown and clinching 2-point conversion, both on 3-yard runs.
Fruitland maintained its unblemished record and perch atop the 3A Snake River Valley Conference, but it wasn’t easy as the Grizzlies traveled to Homedale and prevailed 24-14.
Grangeville avenged an earlier loss by knocking off Kamiah 26-21 on the road in 2A Central Valley Conference play. The Bulldogs and Kubs have now lost only to each other.
The Grace Grizzlies had the upset of the week by beating Challis 54-34 in 1A Division 1 Snake River Conference play.
Game of the Week 8
West Side (7-0) at Malad (7-0): Week 8 has plenty of great games from which to choose, but we dip into the 2A ranks for one of only match-ups between unbeaten teams as the 7-0 West Side Pirates make the short trip to Malad to meet the 7-0 Dragons. On the line is the 2A Southeast Idaho Conference title and a top seed in the state playoffs, which both teams will enter regardless of the outcome. The Dragons have been scoring 46.5 points per game, but they’ll be tested by a West Side defense that has allowed just 7.4 points per game.
Runner-Up
Castleford (7-0) at Rockland (7-0): This battle will decide state seedings and the 1A Division 2 Sawtooth Conference championship as the Rockland Bulldogs entertain top-ranked Castleford. The Wolves haven’t been held under 50 points all season, but they will be in hostile territory.
Honorable Mention
Sugar-Salem (6-1) at South Fremont (5-2): Sugar-Salem takes the Mountain Rivers Conference title with a victory. If South Fremont prevails, these two are tied at the top with Salmon, but all three will move to the state playoffs.
Hillcrest (6-1) at Blackfoot (5-2): The Hillcrest Knights take the 4A High Country Confererence title and the No. 1 seed out of the Sixth District with a victory. A Blackfoot win leaves a three-way tie atop the conference with Shelley joining the group. All three teams will advance to the 4A state playoffs.
Weiser (5-2) at Fruitland (7-0): The Grizzlies sit atop the 3A state polls, but that means nothing when they take on Weiser for the Snake River Valley regular season title. The Wolverines have been on a roll with five straight wins by an average margin of 31 points.
Coeur d’Alene (6-1) at Post Falls (6-1): There is more than bragging rights on the line as these two fight for 5A playoff position. Coeur d’Alene controls its fate with this tilt and a season-ending battle with Lake City. The Post Falls Trojans need a win to stay in the playoff chase since their lone loss was to Lake City.
Minico (5-2) at Twin Falls (6-1): The winner takes the 4A Great Basin West title and a top seed for the playoffs. Twin Falls’ only blemish is a one-point loss to Pocatello; Minico has been on a roll with four straight wins. The Tigers’ only loss against an Idaho team was 13-6 to top-ranked Bishop Kelly.
Rocky Mountain (6-1) at Vallivue (5-2): Don’t blink or you might miss the action as the clock will be running with two prolific rushing teams on the field. Rocky Mountain has been dominant, but the Grizzlies can’t overlook the importance of this key 5A SIC Division 2 game. Vallivue has lost two straight, but the Falcons are at home and can tie Rocky Mountain for the Division 2 lead with an upset win.
Pocatello (6-1) vs. Highland (3-4): The classic battle for bragging rights in the Gate City looks a little strange with the Rams sporting a rare losing record. Two of those losses were to Utah teams and another by one point. Pocatello was derailed 44-3 by Preston two weeks ago, but the Indians rebounded last week with a 43-42 win over 5A Skyline and will be ready for the rival Rams.
