PLAYERS TO WATCH Madison Jackson, Junior, Parma Darcie Condie, Senior, Parma Adyson Harris, Sophomore, Parma Shelby Allen, Junior, Weiser Carleigh LaCrone, Senior, Fruitland Maddie Pedaricini, Senior, Fruitland Amaya Carter, Junior, Homedale
There is a lot of enthusiasm around the gym at Parma this winter as the Panthers enter the new season as preseason favorites in both boys and girls basketball.
The Lady Panthers bring back junior Madison Jackson, a First Team All-State Selection and Player of the Year in the SRV as a sophomore.
Having one of the more dynamic options in the state at his disposal will make things a little easier for sixth year head coach Michael Calkins, especially with a more experienced group on hand.
“Last year we were young and talented but had no experience. We are still young and talented, [with] only three seniors on the team, but after a run at state last year we now bring some experience with us this season,” added Calkins.
Second Team All-Conference honorees Darcie Condie and Adyson Harris are a couple of quality forwards who can post up and have success when needed, but primarily they fit into the Parma brand of having shooters all over the floor.
“We like to push the ball and want the pace of the game to be up-tempo. All of the girls have the green light to shoot 3’s and [we] want to shoot around 30 attempts a game. We are hoping that speed kills, because this is the fastest team I have had in six years,” said Calkins.
This team has to improve on the glass however.
“Because we want to get the ball up the court quickly, we have a tendency to forget to crash the boards. That is a weakness we will have to overcome if we want to have a successful year,” said Calkins.
It’s a logjam after Parma to fill out the state tournament representation from the SRV, which gets two teams in come February.
Homedale returns a good amount of talent from last year, and could see an uphill climb in wins as a result.
“They have some great talent and are super competitive,” said Fruitland head coach Amber Drollinger.
After a year with youth, this could be the year it pays off.
“They were young last year and bring a lot of talent back. They will be tough this year,” added Calkins.
Junior Amaya Carter leads the way for the Trojans, and is an impact player to watch in the conference this season.
Fruitland and returning Second Team All-Conference senior post Maddie Pedaricini have a new coach in Drollinger on the sideline. The Grizzlies will benefit from also returning Honorable Mention All-Conference talents Caitilin Rice, Sydney Miller and Carleigh LaCrone.
In order for Fruitland to make a trip to the state tournament this year they will need sophomores like forward Lilly Richins and guard Elie Tesnohildek to step into important roles in a big way.
The first year coach likes the group she has in place.
“They have great chemistry and enthusiasm for the game. We have improved a lot defensively and offensively we need to take care of the basketball. If we can play together on both ends of the floor it will be what makes us successful,” said Drollinger.
Weiser was a tournament team last year, but graduated four seniors, including Katie and CJ Davis.
They’ll need junior guard Shelbie Allen to have a monster season to make a return trip, something she is more than capable of. The Wolverines have a fairly large senior class as well, with five girls set to graduate after this season.
Payette went winless last year and will be looking to get back on the win column for the first time since December 11, 2014.
