Team Preview:
Written by: Brandon McIntosh
With a good mix of returners and newcomers to varsity, first year coach Mike Webster looks to build up the Nezperce Indian program. Webster is eager to build and believes he has the pieces, but needs to be able to work with them a bit more.
Three seniors will enter this season with Coach Webster-Michael Barnett, Gerry Fischer, and Blake Webster-and will be eager to see where the season takes them.
This is an athletic group that will look to be aggressive on defense by mixing man and zone to combat the opposition’s strengths. Coach Webster wants to create more turnovers while cutting down on his own. Rebounding all-around will be a focal point with this group and being more productive with every possession.
Offensively, they will be more balanced and expect a lot of production from underclassmen Landon Wahl and Jimmy Barnett scoring and distributing the ball. Inside, the Indians will rely on Mitchell Barnett and Garrett Nelson to control the paint and provide a scoring punch. Players like Blake Webster and Gerry Fischer bring aggressive play on both ends. This team will maximize their potential through their hustle and teamwork.
We have a talented group of kids who have not had a lot of success in the past,” states first year coach Webster. “I think we will be more successful this year and I am excited to see the team build confidence by being competitive.”
If the Indians are able to stabilize their shooting percentage, find balance, and be aggressive on both ends, they could be finding themselves battling for important spots come playoff time. Only time will tell.
