In head coach Mike Chatterton’s first season, the Meridian Warriors went 8-14, where five wins came before Christmas. The non-conference portion of the schedule was not the issue; it was conference play.
That has proven to be problematic for the Warriors in recent history. In the 2014-15 season, Meridian started 7-0 before finishing 11-10.
Traditionally, once the Warriors get into conference play, wins are hard to come by. The 2015-16 Warriors won five of their first seven and went 3-12 the rest of the way.
Although this year’s version has yet to play a game, they are young and return a collection of guards.
Senior point guard Jacob Watson and sophomores Spencer Fair and Dallen Perrin return to the backcourt a still young squad. “Our Team will be very young and inexperienced,” Chatterton said. “We have several talented players that can step up during the course of the season.”
With a guard-heavy team, the Warriors will be quick, have good ball-handling and be able to shoot the lights out of the gym. But with a smaller lineup comes rebounding issues, which may prove to be an issue.
Other issues that come with a smaller team is defending the low post.
Meridian will have to use their team speed to force turnovers, run in transition and get easy buckets on the run. To do so, they have to stay disciplined.
Playing quick can cause teams to play faster than they think, meaning the Warriors will have to make an effort to be consistent in their decision making on every offensive possession.
If they don’t; make good decisions, it could be a long season. If they are, they do make good decisions they could surprise a lot of people. “Team quickness will be a key for our defensive philosophy,” Chatterton said. “We will be able to do more things on the defensive end of the floor with the speed we have on the team this season.”
