Dietrich waited 50 years to get back to the top as state champions for boys basketball, something the Blue Devils accomplished with a 68-55 victory over Council in the 2016 1AD2 state title tilt.
If the returning talent is any indication, the current group might not have to wait as long to get back to the promise land, with a bevy of playmakers on the floor at the disposal of 15th year Head Coach Wayne Dill.
Almost everybody returns, highlighted by 1AD2 Player of the Year Garrett Astle and the supporting cast of Slade Dill, Jake Smith, Kaden Tew, Porter Robertson and Kade Shaw.
Astle is a slasher who also possesses the ability to take the open shot and drain it as well.
"Garrett can get to the goal on anyone and elevates so well that he shoots over top of most defenders or out-quicks them to the goal," said Dill.
The reigning state Player of the Year isn't the only mismatch created by the style Dietrich plays.
"We are fast and like to run the floor. We call it 'controlled chaos'. We go to the goal well and have some good shooters. Individually our players are able to create their own shots on the move, not just spot up shooters," said Dill.
The head coach likes the skill sets offensively of the group.
"Kade Shaw is a fine point guard who handles the ball and pressure well and drives well. Nice 3-point shot, too. Slade can shoot the three and get off a nice mid-range jumper. His height [6’6”] allows him to shoot over defenders. Kaden Tew is healthy this year and has a nice jumper as well as 3-point shot. He is both quick and fast and jumps well in the middle. Porter Robertson gives us a solid player on the outside with a nice jumper and very savvy rebounding."
On that side of the floor there is still potential for improvement though.
"We would like to rebound the offensive boards better and get the ball down the floor faster."
An aggressive defense makes things difficult for the opposition, with the Blue Devils always known for success in the transition game, something which helped lead to the state championship victory last season.
The length of Slade Dill down low can wreck havoc as well.
"Slade Dill has such long arms and quick hands that he frustrates people with his deflections and blocks and at times totally dominates the boards," said the elder Dill.
If Dietrich can stay healthy the returning roster should be more than enough to allow this team to compete once again for a state title at the 1AD2 ranks.
