Team Preview: Written by: Chris Langrill
Sometimes a high school team can sneak up on its opponents. That won't be the case with the Homedale High football team this season.
There are just too many players returning from last year's team, which finished with a 6-4 overall record.
First and foremost, teams will be acutely aware of the return of quarterback Lawsen Matteson, who has twice earned first-team, all-state honors. As a junior last season, Matteson completed 184 of 322 passes for 2,268 yards and 19 touchdowns. He comes into his senior season with more than 4,500 yards passing and 50 touchdowns.
“It's going to be a fun senior year for him,” coach Matt Holtry said. And this team isn't just about Matteson, who led the Trojans to the state semifinals as a sophomore.
Matteson will have plenty of weapons in his arsenal. If he's looking to hand off, he can turn to senior Josh Tolmie, who was named a first-team, all-conference running back as a junior (and earned second-team honors as a defensive back). If Matteson is looking to throw the ball, his first option might be Conner Carter, a second-team, all conference player as a junior last season. But defenses won't be able to key in on Carter alone. The offense also has two other senior wide receivers in Garrett Carter and Chase Martell. Throw in junior receiver Jake Deal, and Homedale will definitely be able to keep defenses on their toes.
“As a team, we return several starters on the offensive side of the ball,” Holtry said. “Key positions have seniors returning.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Jakobee Osborn is a player to watch. As a junior, Osborn earned second-team, all-conference honors.
But, like the offense, the defense won't be a one-trick pony.
“With the return of several experienced players from last season, we are hoping that experience pays off with great communication and kids flying around as a team,” Holtry said.
Add it all up, and it's easy to see why the seventh-year coach is excited about the upcoming season. “I enjoy the family atmosphere that this team and staff have created,” he said. And don't ask him to single out any one contest he thinks fans should see this year.
“Every game is a must-see game,” Holtry said. “These seniors are going to be playing the last games of their high school careers and those memories are ones you don't want to miss.”
