Team Preview: Written by: Chris Langril
The Council High football team has won four state championships since 1984, with the last title coming in 2006.
The Lumberjacks made a serious run at another state title last season, when they went 9-2 and lost by one touchdown in the semifinals to eventual champion Lighthouse.
Council coach Dan Shumway said this year's team will miss the seniors who made up the core of last year's squad. “We will miss the leadership and playmaking ability of (that) great group of seniors,” Shumway said. “Most of them had started since their freshman year.”
But after 15 years of being the school's head coach, Shumway knows better than most that he can only do one thing: Lock and reload.
And the cupboard isn't bare.
Herry Ludwig, a second-team, all conference quarterback and defensive end, should provide leadership in his senior season.
Three other players who earned postseason honors return, as well: wide receiver/safety Ryan Rosengrant; center/linebacker JT Mahon; and utility player/defensive tackle Jared Neal.
“We still return some very explosive playmakers with some great speed,” Shumway said. “We also have some players who have the versatility to play multiple positions at a very high level.”
Indeed, Shumway pointed out that he will have some options on the offensive side of the ball.
“We have potentially two very good quarterbacks in Herry Ludwig and Brett Rosengrant,” he said. “We have some big and fast running backs with good hands … and our wide receivers will be led by speedy all-conference wide receiver Ryan Rosengrant. … Our O-line will be faster and have more depth this year.”
Defensively, Shumway likes the fact that he'll have proven talent all over the field: on the defensive line (Neal and Ludwig), at linebacker (Mahon) and in the secondary (Rosengrant).
“To these players we will add some very good experienced players who haven't started due to the big class of seniors last year, but have played at a very high level for us,” Shumway said.
First among those players is defensive lineman Adam Cameron, who started nine games the previous two seasons. “Hopefully, we can build on last year and continue to play at the level we did last year,” Shumway said.
That's a fairly lofty goal, however, since last year's team had six shutouts and held opponents to an average of 11 points per game. Shumway is a veteran coach, but he still gets excited about the prospect of watching players develop each season.
“I just want to see how our new starters will step into the big shoes of our departing seniors,” he said.
