Team Preview
Written by David Bashore
There’s pretty much no predicting which teams will survive the 2A Nuclear Conference girls basketball campaign. It’s far and away the most competitive conference in the state top-to-bottom and any team that gets out of the district is in good shape to make a state championship run.
North Fremont proved that in 2013, winning it all. It hopes that, at minimum, it can survive the Nuke and get back to state in 2016.
The Huskies return six players from last season’s squad, including first-team all-conference selection Halle Hill, a junior forward. Joining her are senior guards Mckinley Litton, Lorie Miller and Savanna McDonald, junior forward Kristie Hawkes and junior guard Mckenzie Martindale.
Hill can score inside and out, while McDonald adds a good shooting ability from the perimeter. The general focus is team offense and playing with composure, which will go a long way toward improving the two key areas of emphasis: turnovers and offensive execution.
Defensively the Huskies boast a quick guard line, which should allow them to put more pressure on opposing offenses and force more turnovers. They lack overall team size, which will force creativity in getting rebounds.
If North Fremont can accentuate its positives and shore up the shortcomings, it will be as well placed as possible when the business end of the season rolls around in February.
