Team Preview

Last year everything was new under a first-year head coach at McCall-Donnelly, which went 10-12 in the 2014-15 season. This time out the Vandals are looking to make a run at a possible district championship.
McCall-Donnelly returns three key players, led by Lexi Tinney, a first-team all-conference selection last season. Also returning are Camille Botello and Kaylie Jones. Botello and Tinney were the team’s leading scorers last season. Joining them as potential impact players are senior center Ashley Phelps and junior guards JoJo Salinas and Shay West.
There is a solid core overall that is familiar and comfortable with the offense, which is designed to get into the open court and have easy baskets. In the half-court set they’ll operate with more motion and read and react types of offenses. One goal for the Vandals this season is to get into transition even more if possible, while limiting their own turnovers.
On defense the goal is simple: make life difficult for opponents. Whether it’s through on-ball pressure, rebounding and running, or plain making things uncomfortable, McCall-Donnelly wants to increase possessions and score as quickly as possible. Winning the battle for the ball through rebounding and winning loose balls is a point of emphasis.
This team has another year of experience under second year coach Cody Hansen, and now it’s time for the Vandals to build on the foundation they built last season. Hansen believes if they can control the game tempo and win the turnover battle, the Vandals have a real chance to make some serious headway in the district.
