The coaching carousel at Canyon Ridge High School continues as the Lady Riverhawks embrace a new coach. Kevin Cato, who spent 15 years as the boys basketball coach in Hagerman, takes over the reigns and hopes to improve on a 3-19 campaign from last season. However, the Riverhawks do return some vital cogs: seniors Madison Bell, Alyssa Keyes, and Selma Masic hope to lead the Riverhawks to relevancy in a very tough Great Basin Conference. Newcomers Emily Bell and Ally Gates will be asked to step into varsity action and contribute early if the Riverhawks are to get their season off on the right track.
Cato will hope to employ a motion offense that will create shots for all five players on the floor. The unquestioned leader will be Madison Bell, but a balanced scoring attack is how the Riverhawks will try to approach things from the offensive end. The Riverhawks should have a little bit of depth and will look to their bench to play a vital role in their success. Defensively, look for Canyon Ridge to play up tempo. Cato’s teams love to pressure the basketball and incorporate a variety full court presses to help disrupt their opponents. However, the succeed with that style of play, a team needs a little bit of depth and athleticism; both of which Cato believes he has. “We will be pretty athletic at all positions with a little bit of depth. We hope to be in the face of our opponents from tip off to final buzzer,” says Cato. An x-factor for the Lady Riverhawks might be that even coming off a 3-19 season, the ladies at Canyon Ridge are learning how to win. All of the ladies fall programs at Canyon Ridge High School qualified for the state tournament and that experience will be valuable for the girls basketball team this year.
