Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

For a team that lost as much as the Filer Wildcats had prior to last season, making it to the 3A state tournament again and winning a game was quite the positive sign.

In 2014 Filer took home the state championship, graduating multiple key players from that team, although do-everything playmaker Meghan Hughes and a strong supporting cast helped to make sure the effects of the losses were minimized.

Hughes’ efforts led to her being named the conference player of the year, with the senior now back for her final campaign and hoping to make even more noise.

“Meghan Hughes will be a threat with ability to play any position on the court,” said Head Coach Kody Ketterling. “She will be hard to guard or match-up against because of her versatility. We will be stronger in the post and will have more depth.”

Plenty of talent surrounds Hughes also, making the Wildcats a big threat in the 3A again this season.

“Sidney Bartholomew will be strong in the post but can move out to wing,” said Ketterling. “Kelsie Jarolimek will make herself known in the post and be a good rebounder. Victoria Deetz has a good outside shot. The focus will be to move the ball and create looks so that everyone can score. Our younger kids this year will be an added dimension and be able to help us out on the court.”

The emphasis this season for Filer will be on the defensive end of the court.

“We will focus on our defense and from that it will create offense,” said Ketterling. “We are going to work hard on the defensive end of the ball. We hope to put pressure on the other team to make a mistake. We will run if we can.”

Expect multiple looks from the Wildcats on defense.

“For defense, it is a team thing. Everyone has to become strong and focus on their duties as a player in order for us to be successful,” said Ketterling. “We run several defenses, which will help us against many teams that we play and can allow us to mix it up.”

The hope is to create more turnovers this year than the team was able to do last season.

Ketterling is most excited about the way his team is coming together, as he says the group is “all-in” which will be important in a conference with Kimberly threatening to overtake the Wildcats at the top.

Filer begins the season with four consecutive home games before heading on the road Nov. 24 at Sugar-Salem.
