Team Preview
Written by: David Bashore
Camas County’s 2014-15 campaign ended almost as quickly as it began, and far more quietly: the Mushers started the season with five players, added a sixth a month into the season, but lost two to season-ending injuries in the same game and had to abandon the season 11 games in. This season, though, they have three returners and six newcomers, giving them precious depth and a fighting chance to improve in 2015-16.
Camas County returns leading scorer Etta Seaman, a guard and the team’s only senior, to anchor the perimeter alongside juniors Leah Stewart and Taylor Rock. The cavalry came in the form of a large group of players up from middle school, including four freshmen with a chance to make an impact. Where that depth may make the biggest impact, though, is in the intensity of the game. Last season players had to dial down the aggressiveness to avoid foul trouble because of the lack of substitutes – Camas County finished with fewer than five players on five occasions last season. This season there is depth to utilize and allow the starters to take a few more chances on defense.
Seaman and Stewart provide solid shooting from outside, which is one of the strengths of the Camas County offense. The freshman class should provide a modicum of inside presence, though the Mushers largely remain undersized. Execution on offense and in the general game plan is the biggest key for Camas County to make inroads in what is a loaded Northside Conference this season.
