The 4A state consolation champion Nampa Bulldogs are jumping from the 4A Southern Idaho Conference ranks to the 5A Southern Idaho Conference to begin the 2014-15 girls’ basketball season. Nampa will be part of “Pod A” in the 5A SIC that includes Borah, Capital, Centennial, Rocky Mountain, and Timberline.

The Bulldogs are coming off back-to-back state appearances the last two seasons (4A ranks), and look to build off their experience as they return eight starters from last year’s squad, which includes seven returning seniors.

One of those returning seniors is 5-11 senior post, first-team all-conference/all-state (4A SIC), Danielle Jardine. Jardine averaged 16.5 points and 12.3 rebounds last season and returning Coach Cam Long says, “She is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached.”

Jardine is joined again this season by her twin sister, Raquel Jardine (4 year starter), senior guards, Madison Wells, Mercedes Perez, Bailey Johhanson, Cynthia Martinez, and returning senior post, Dulce Martinez. Rounding out the returners for the season is junior guard, Jennifer Castaneda.

“With most of our team returning from last year I am excited to see how we can compete at the 5A level,” says 11th year head coach Cam Long.

“We have a lot of varsity/state experience on our team and I think that we will be more than competitive at the next level, we will just need to improve in some areas.”

One of the areas the Bulldogs will need to improve from last season is their free-throw shooting; where they shot a dismal 53%. Coach Long says the girls have been working hard in the offseason to improve their shooting percentages and hope they can be around 70% as a team this season.

Where Nampa excels is on the boards and on the defensive end. On a given night, Nampa has the ability and experience to change in and out of multiple defenses and run them very effectively and efficiently. The Bulldogs also out-rebounded their opponents in almost every game last season.

On paper Nampa looks primed and ready to make the jump in conference and competition this season, and will be very competitive in the process.

They bring toughness, experience, and great coaching to an already elite conference. Don’t be surprised if you see Nampa in the top two of “Pod A,” in the SIC conference, as well as one of the four teams from the conference punching their ticket to the state tournament.

GAMES TO WATCH: Capital looks to be the favorite in pod “A” going into the season, so look for these games to be highly entertaining on November 22 @ Nampa and January 17 @ Capital.
