During their four-year reign as champions at the 1AD2 basketball classification, the Dietrich Lady Devils have utilized effective perimeter play and stingy defense to become only the second Idaho girls basketball team to win four straight titles.
It’s safe to say Head Coach Acey Shaw has built a dynasty.
His group in 2014-2015 appears to be primed again for a long run in the state tournament come February.
Jacey Shaw, the daughter of the coach and the 2013-2014 1AD2 girls basketball player of the year, returns for her senior season, trying to pull of the amazing accomplishment of four titles in her high school career.
The younger Shaw filled up the stat sheet again last season, tallying 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks per game on her way to plenty of postseason accolades.
Even with all the success of recent seasons, the Lady Devils lost just one senior from last season, Alex Berthelson, meaning they have all hands on-deck to try for five in a row.
The strong wing play of Katee Hubert and Nicki Larson will be on display again alongside Shaw, giving Dietrich plenty of options regarding where to go on the offensive end.
After averaging close to 50 points per game last year, easily the highest total of teams from 1AD2 that made state tournament play, the recipe for success will again be the same.
That recipe will consist of plenty perimeter shooting and easy baskets to complement.
For Dietrich, the best offense will continue to be their strong defense. The Lady Devils are consistently one of the best teams in the state at playing the full 32 minutes, something done plenty of by their leader Shaw.
In the 31-26 state championship victory over Mackay last year, Shaw played every minute of the game, tallying 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
While the Lady Devils should find plenty of success on the perimeter and when they slash to the basket, it will be important to find a low-post presence, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Hubert provided most of the interior play, especially during state tournament play last season, and coach Shaw will be looking for some other players to step up alongside her to push his team over the top.
With the emergence of Lighthouse Christian in the 1AD2 North Side Conference, Dietrich will need to have their best season yet to again bring the hardware home.
