Team Preview

Written by: Ryan Lee

The Eagle Lady Mustangs return 11 girls (four starters) from last year’s team that went 8-15 under first year coach Cody Pickett. Entering his second year as the girls’ varsity head coach, Coach Pickett is anxious to see how his team performs after a year of experience under his new system.

Before becoming the head coach for the Mustangs last year, Coach Pickett led North Star Charter to a 34-18 record and two state tournament appearances in two seasons as the boys head basketball coach. The school had never reached the state tournament before his arrival. With that being said, Coach Pickett has a knack for turning teams around in a positive direction, and his Lady Mustangs very well could be the surprise/turn-around team in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference.

To start the 2014-15 season, the Mustangs return seven seniors, along with their starting point guard in sophomore, Cassidy Tiegs, and 6-2 Junior post Jenny Stevens, both all-league honorable mentions. Stevens is a very versatile player that can play inside and out; so don’t be surprised if you see her out on the perimeter in some situations.

Eagle also gets back sophomore Abby Mangum, sister of Eagle High School star quarterback Tanner Mangum. Mangum was a major contributor as a freshman until she tore her ACL in the middle of the season last year. Look for her to bounce back and be a major contributor for Eagle again this season.

Returning seniors for the Mustangs include Bentli Corta, Mary Trumble, Kylee Coffin, Kaden Snooks, Madi Ruplinger, Lauren Abel, and Tori Dimattio. These seven seniors bring toughness, depth, and experience to a very well balanced Eagles squad.

One goal for the Lady Mustangs this season is to get back to the state tournament. They are in the tougher 5A SIC B conference, but with the experience and depth of this Eagles team, the Lady Mustangs could very well see themselves as one of the tougher teams in the conference this upcoming season.

GAME TO WATCH: The one thing working against the Mustangs this season is being part of the 5A SIC B conference, which has conference favorites Boise and Mountain View inside it. Eagle will play both teams twice this season, home and away, so look for these conference games throughout the season because they should be highly entertaining.
