Up first are the 5A games. I'll post separate blogs for each division, so make sure you check them all out! So, here we go - the most accurate state tournament picks in the state of Idaho for the opening round of the 2014 5A Girls Real Dairy Shootout.
5A
CDA over Hillcrest 43-34
The Vikings are 20-2. They are led by three seniors, Sydney Williams, Brittany Tackett and Madison Sumner. CDA has played in the state title game seven of the last eight years, winning three of them and has brought home a trophy of some sort every other time. Hillcrest has had a great season coming in 20-4. Three of those losses came to district championship Highland. This will be the first time the Knights have been to the big dance as a 5A team. The last time the played in the state tournament was in 2008 when they came as a 4A team. Bottom line - You never pick against CDA in the first round. Never.
Mt View over Capital 45-29
Capital brought back a lot of experience this year, including Khadija Neumeyer and Delaney Saur, both seniors. Mt View is a young team (they only start one senior) but they have the Three Amigos - Destiny Slocum (So), Kayla Anderson (Fr) and F Renee Routhier (Jr). In the end the sharp passing and quickness of Mt View's guards will be the difference.
Rocky Mt over Highland 55-48
Districts are a fickle thing. Perhaps the only team in the state that was just as disappointed when Boise upset Rocky Mt in districts was the Highland Rams. The Rams were expecting to play the #3 team out of the 5A SIC, which is technically what they got. However, in this case that team was also ranked #1 in the state most of the year. That doesn't mean they still don't feel like the best 5A team in the state and with Emery Roy at the helm and Sr. point guard Madi Kelly leading the offense, the Grizzlies will just be too much for a very game Highland Ram team who just had terrible luck of the draw.
Lewiston over Boise 39-26
The Lady Bengals, are staring down their chance to bring home their third state title in the past four years. Pat Teichmer, in her 10th year as head coach in Lewiston, has her team running on all cylinders and ready to go. The Lady Braves are still riding high after upsetting previously undefeated Rocky Mt during districts. Will the Rocky Mt Foothills-High be enough to beat the 20-3 Bengals? I don't think so.
