1. Peter Story/Josh Prince (Logos)

The two seniors lined up across from one of the state's top quarterbacks on Saturday in the heat, on the road, in the first game of the season...and combined for eight sacks.  Story (nose guard) and Prince (defensive end) each collected four, leading a tremendous defensive effort in a 34-8 win over Hagerman.

2. Jarrett Keen (Deary)

The sophomore quarterback had 331 total yards (252 passing, 79 rushing), three touchdown passes, two touchdown runs, and had a hand in three point-after-touchdown conversions in the Mustangs' season-opening win over Troy.

3. Gus Scott (Wallace)

The senior pass-catcher hauled in eight passes in his team's season-opening win over Timberline of Weippe, four of which went for touchdowns.  As a point of reference, Scott had just two receiving touchdowns all of last season.

Starting Hot

Two teams that went winless in 2024 each won their openers last week.  1A Clark Fork toppled Lakeside in District 1, 44-26, behind three touchdowns from Mateo Cruz and two each from Jason Mayorga and Payton Chapman.  Meanwhile, 2A Centennial Baptist overcame a 24-0 deficit to edge Wilder, 36-32.  Senior Caleb West ran in the go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute to play, and then the defense held to close out the victory.  It's the first win for Centennial Baptist, which is in its second season as a stand-alone program.

Bring It Right Back

The Kendrick Tigers opened the Ty Koepp era with a resounding win over Butte County on Friday in a neutral-site matchup in Homedale, just outside of Caldwell.  Kendrick steps out of conference again this coming week, taking on the Oakley Hornets...in Homedale.  Two weeks, two games, two 280-mile trips from Kendrick to Homedale.

About 3 Stars

The weekly "3 Star" awards are meant to promote the 8-man game in Idaho.  As local media outlets lose resources, they're able to cover fewer events.  It's not their fault, the writers and broadcasters want to be there.  So we're trying to help fill in the gaps.  Want to help?  Make sure your school's scores (in ALL sports) get reported to the local paper.  Offer to volunteer at games so coaches and administrators can upload statistics and box scores after games.  And, most importantly, be a positive influence in whatever role you fill - player, coach, official, parent, or fan.  Do your part, whatever that part may be, to make your hometown team's games the greatest event they can be!
