The 2025 Idaho State Championships in the Class 5A (formerly 4A) was by far one of the most exciting of the entire state tournament. In actuality, it was déjà vu all over again. The team race between Bishop Kelly and Minico lived up to the pre-tournament hype and mirrored the 2024 Championships. This year’s Class 5A added one wrestler to the 4x State Champions Club, four into the 2x Champions Club, and ten more first time titlist. Additionally, six earned their fourth state medal, six with number three, and twenty-six more earning their second.

As mentioned, the Class 5A produced a large contingent of wrestler with multiple state titles, placings, and All-American honors to their credit. Joining the prestigious 4x State Champions Club is Bishop Kelly’s multiple All-American Matthew Martino. Matthew, a Princeton commit joins his older brother, Christopher, who won four titles from 2019 to 2022. As a result, the Martino’s are the fourth set of brothers in the state of Idaho to earn this highly regarded honor. A total of five wrestlers earned their second title. They include All-Americans Holton Crane (Bishop Kelly, 106s), Saxton Scott (Idaho Falls, 132s), Carlos Valdez (Bishop Kelly, 157s), and sophomore standout Carson Leonard of Lakeland (120s), who is on trajectory to challenge for a possible third and fourth title.

A total of ten wrestlers earned their first state title. They include sophomore standouts Zach Teal (Lakeland, 98s), Ayden Tokita (Skyline, 113s), and two-time finalist/All-American Jake Mescher of Bishop Kelly. Also standing on the top of the podium for the first time include 4x placer Jabyn Kemble (Middleton, 126s), 3x finalist DJ Neider (Idaho Falls, 150s), 3x placer Jorden Tyler (Sandpoint, 190s) in addition to Madix Jones (Bonneville, 165s), Ryan Lewis (Middleton, 175s), Dawandey Dilus (Blackfoot, 215s), and Austin Reeves (Hillcrest, 285s).

Altogether, a combined twelve wrestlers earned their respective third or fourth state medal (Several wrestlers were already mentioned above). The remaining include four-timers Greyson Molina (Minico, 120s), Preston Sonner-Cranney (Minico, 190s) in addition to three-timers Mikael Teague (Minico, 106s, Gabe Pyne (Century, 120s), Tristan Vega (Burley, 126s), and Ryker Vail of Bonneville (157s).

Once again, the team race between state powers Bishop Kelly and Minico lived up to pre-tournament expectations and throughout the competition remained fairly close. By the conclusion the medal matches, Minico held a good lead, but left a very small window of opportunity for Bishop Kelly to remain in contention. Coincidentally, Bishop Kelly’s title hopes came down to the final’s match at 190s between defending state champion Preston Sonner-Cranney of Minico and Sandpoint’s Jorden Tyler (2024 final). In a nutshell, if Sonner-Cranney were to repeat, Minico would have won it all. In the end, Tyler quickly became a fan favorite of Bishop Kelly when he registered a convincing 15-5 major decision, thus giving Bishop Kelly the sole state team title by three points and finishing with four individual champions and ten placers overall (last year Minico and Bishop Kelly tied for the state title).
