The Gem State of Idaho represented well at two national level age group competitions recently held in the western United States. The first being the USMC Women’s National Championships in Spokane, Washington and other the US Open in Freestyle and Greco-Roman held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Overall, Idaho brought home 7 individual national titles and 43 age group All-American honors.
This year’s individual National Champions include Suples Hayden Tuma (Senior – GR), Jadon Skellenger (U20 – GR), Aden Attao (U20 – GR), and Derek Matthews (U20 – GR) of Declo, who is now competing for the University of Northern Colorado. At the Women’s Nationals, Olivia Bezdicek (14U), Mylah Henebry (12U), and Carly Cogger (8U) earned titles in their respective age group competitions.
Other familiar names that added another All-American honor to their long list of accolades include Ridge Lovett (Senior – FS), Christopher Martino (U20 – GR), Liv Weiber (U20), Shilo Jones (U20 – GR), Saxton Scott (U17 – GR/FS), Carson Gooley (U17 – FS), Boden Banta (U17 – GR), Hudson Rogers (U17 – GR), Matthew Martino (U17 – GR), Alyssa Randles (Girl’s Showcase), Joely Slyter (U17), and Claire Waite (Girl’s Showcase). Additionally, Oklahoma City commit Maria Sifuentes of Columbia High School and Zoe Fries (Kuna) each earned their first age group All-American honor, while Lewiston’s Hoyt Hvass added to his international medals earned at the Tallinn Open in Estonia with an All-American honor in the U17 Greco-Roman division.
Keep an eye on our young up and coming talent in both the boys and girls divisions. In the U15 division (boys), the Gem State showcased some top level talent. They include national finalist Ivan Ivanov (U15 – GR), Greysen Packer (U15 – GR), Blaise Turner (U15 GR), Carter Smith (U15 – GR), Duane Leslie (U15 – FS), and double All-American Brand’n Edstrom. In the girl’s division, Ali Svancara (14U), Honesty Christofferson (14U), Kahli Brown (14U), MacKenzie Dolan (12U), and Breonna Apodaca (12U) each placed in the top 6 and earned All-American honors.
Overall, it was a great showing by the Gem State of Idaho on a national level. A reflection of the hard work and commitment by many quality coaches, parents, and supporters partaking in great efforts to grow wrestling in our state. Below is a list of All-Americans by tournament and age group.
