The 2023 Idaho State Wrestling Championships held at the Ford Center in Nampa lived up to all my pre-tournament expectations and much more. It was definitely a barnburner of an event from the start to finish. The 2022-’23 season marked the second year that the Girl’s Division competed in the same arena as the boys. Without a doubt, the level of competition has increased a great deal the last few years and with the recent growth at the grass roots level is expected to get even more competitive in the years to come.

This year’s event crowned the second girl’s 4x State Champion in history with Alyssa Randles of Coeur d’ Alene High School dominating her competition at 126s. Entering the championship finals with one technical fall, two pins, she wasted no time in the final and pinned 4x state placer Sophie Sarver of Mountain View to cap her successful prep career. Additionally, Randles is ranked number two in the country and has five All-American honors to her credit.

Three wrestlers earned their second state title. They include 5x All-American Mia Furman of Rocky Mountain (145s), Moscow’s Skyla Zimmerman (120s), and Reece Woods of Eagle (185s). Joining the 4x State Placer Club include Taylor Call (Hillcrest), All-American Kadence Beck (Highland-C), Kayla Vail (Bonneville), Alyssa Randles (Coeur d’ Alene), Mia Furman (Rocky Mountain), Mountain View’s Sophie Sarver (126s), and Hallie Campbell of Columbia at 152s. Additionally, twenty-one more wrestlers earned their second state medal and thirteen more with number three.

The remaining State Champions include All-American Joely Slyter (100 – Lewiston), Nevaeh Therrien (107 – Bonners Ferry), Taylor Hood (114 – Buhl), Jordan Barrett (132 – Payette), Elise Twait (138 – Meridian), Ornella Kero (152 – Boise), Jordynn LeBeau (165 – Eagle), and 2x finalist Amie Hartman of Mountain Home (235s).

Producing two individual State Champions and five placers overall, Eagle earned their third team title in a row, outdistancing state runner-up Mountain Home by 55 points. Coeur d’ Alene finished in third, followed by Columbia and Bonners Ferry.

Taking a closer look at the girl’s state results, 62 out of 72 wrestlers seeded first thru sixth placed in the top 6 (86%), while non-seeds or those seeded seventh or eighth had 10 placers (14%). The lowest seed to win an individual state title was #4 Taylor Hood of Buhl at 114s. Additionally, the total number of incoming freshman to place at state was 8 (11%).
