ORDER GAME PHOTOS

The 2023 Idaho State Wrestling Championships held at the Ford Center in Nampa lived up to all the pre-tournament expectations and much more. It was definitely a barnburner of an event from start to finish. This year’s 2A/1A division (aka, Small School) crowned one 4x State Champion, four 3x State Champions, and twelve more earning their first. Additionally, a total of 42 wrestlers earned two or more career medals at state during their prep careers.  

The small school division produced a large contingent of wrestlers with multiple state titles, placings, and All-American honors to their credit. Joining the rare 4x State Champions Club is All-American Hans Newby of Grace High School, finishing his senior season with a perfect 41-0 record. Joining the 2x State Champions Club is a solid group of wrestlers. They include sophomore standout Gabe Muilenburg of Glenns Ferry (106s), 3x placer Gage Vasquez of Firth (120s), and 3x finalist and All-American Tucker Bowen of Soda Springs (120s).

A total of twelve wrestlers earned their first state title. They include seniors Austin Machen (145 – Ririe), Hyrum Boone (152 – Ririe), Walker Pelto (182 – Bear Lake), Jason Buxton (195 – West Jefferson), and Matyus McLain of Priest River at 220s. The remaining individual state champions include underclassman Carter Kimball (98 -Grace), Wallace Durfee (126 – Declo), Jaeger hall (132 – Kellogg), Jacob Shaw (138 – New Plymouth), Colten Gunderson (160 – West Side), Wyatt Cutler (170 – Grace), and Nathan Willoughby of New Plymouth at 285s.

Other notable statistics include wrestlers that have earned more than one state medal in their respective prep careers. A total of seven wrestlers joined the 4x state placers club, thirteen more earning three medals, and twenty-two earning their second (see below for more detail).

The road to the team title was hard fought from round one thru the championship finals. Similar to 2022, the top teams battling for the small school title were New Plymouth and Ririe. Losing by one team point to Ririe in 2022, New Plymouth regrouped and put on a solid performance this year producing two individual champions and eight placers overall. Also producing two individual champions and eight placers, Ririe was a close second followed by West Side and Malad. Bonus points definitely make a HUGE difference!

Taking a closer look at the small school state results, 77 out of 90 wrestlers seeded in the top 6 placed (86%), while seeds 7^th/8^th had 8 placers (9%), followed by non-seeds with 5 (6%). The lowest seeds to win an individual state title was Carter Kimball of Grace (98s), Glenns Ferry’s Gabe Muilenburg (106s), Austin Machen of Ririe (145s), and West Jefferson’s Jason Buxton (195s), each seeded #2. Additionally, the total number of No. 2 wrestlers to place in the small school division was 2 (2%) and incoming freshman placers at 10 (11%).
