On Saturday at Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls, the Gem State's brightest young players and recently graduated 8-man stars took the field for the 2021 Idaho All-State Games. The 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade All-State Games featured "Team Treasure Valley", which consisted of players from Boise Metro and it's outlying communities, against "Team Idaho" which consisted of players from everywhere else. The 8-Man All-State Game took on a more traditional "East" vs. "West" format. Fans that want to download a copy of Saturday's games can do so by clicking this link. Here's how the action went on Saturday:
6th Grade All-State Game
Team Idaho 16, Team Treasure Valley 7
Team Idaho used a strong ground game from a pair of future Coeur d'Alene High running backs to earn the win. Ben Murray of Coeur d'Alene opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run, and fellow Viking Bear Coleman kicked the point-after (worth two points) to put Team Idaho ahead 8-0. That score held until the third quarter, when Team Treasure Valley was able to capitalize on an Idaho mistake. Coeur d'Alene's Gibson Comstock fumbled the second half kickoff, and Mountain View's Denton Wilson recovered inside the 20-yard line. Wilson then caught a 13 yard touchdown from fellow Mountain View quarterback Colin Foy, and Mountain View's Will Miles ran in the conversion (worth one point). Leading 8-7, Team Idaho put the game away with 5:43 to play in the fourth quarter. Rigby's Karter Oswald intercepted Foy, which lead to a 1-yard touchdown run by Coeur d'Alene's Bear Coleman. Coleman was named Offensive MVP, while Oswald picked up Defensive MVP honors.
7th Grade All-State Game
Team Idaho 25, Team Treasure Valley 12
The defenses dominated this matchup. Team Idaho forced four turnovers. Coeur d'Alene's Priest Palmgren and Skyline's Sanai Waynewood recovered fumbles, while Lewiston's Gage Steiner and Skyline's Zyan Crockett intercepted passes. Crockett returned his interception 40 yards for a touchdown, one of four touchdowns on the day for Crockett, the Offensive MVP. The future Skyline Grizzly ran in three touchdowns from one, 12 and 19 yards out, and scored all 25 points for Team Idaho. Team Treasure Valley collected five takeaways defensively, but could only score 12 points off of those turnovers. Eagle quarterback Joseph Chandler threw a pair of TD's; a 30-yarder to Kuna's Jackson Edwards and a 46-yard strike to Timberline's Hudson Lewis. Eagle's Jeremiah Minnett, Rocky Mountain's Dominic Al-Shawaf and Timberline's Ian Arnold recovered fumbles defensively, while Edwards and Lewis also collected interceptions to go along with their touchdown receptions. Edwards was named Defensive MVP.
8th Grade All-State Game
Team Treasure Valley 27, Team Idaho 12
Future Skyview running back Ryker Oswald put on a show, earning Offensive MVP honors for the second year in a row. Oswald scored on a 1-yard run and also threw a 59-yard touchdown to Meridian's Carver Martin on a halfback pass. Oswald finished his strong day with an interception, one of seven turnovers forced by the Treasure Valley defense. Kuna's Kaiden Turner collected an interception and recovered a fumble and was named Defensive MVP. Kuna's Colton Deatherage opened the scoring with a 10-yard interception return for a touchdown to give Treasure Valley a 6-0 lead. Aren Monk of Eagle recovered a fumble and Emmett's Casey Coburn and Meridian's Luke Miller intercepted passes as well. The final Treasure Valley score came on an 18-yard pass from Timberline's Austin Rovig to Weiser's Xavier Gray. Team Idaho scored on a pair of long passes from Skyline QB Carmyne Garcia; an 81-yarder to fellow Skyline Grizzly Taylor DeMott and a 62-yard strike to Burley's Bodey Coombes.
8-Man All-State Game
East All-Stars 46, West All-Stars 22
The East All-Stars saw six different players score touchdowns, as a balanced effort was too much for the West. Carey quarterback Hunter Smith was named Offensive MVP, as he scored on a 1-yard run and also threw two touchdowns; a 4-yarder to Watersprings' Matthew Almgren and a 37-yarder to fellow Carey Panther Ashton Sparrow. Ethan Bernad of Raft River scored on runs of 14 and 24 yard runs, Isaac Mitton of Oakley scored on a 12-yard run, and Grace's Bray Skinner capped the scoring with a 2-yard plunge. Skinner and Dietrich's Manny Cabrera recovered fumbles on defense, and Oakley's Isaac Mitton earned Defensive MVP honors. The West received touchdowns from Garden Valley's Corban Fields on a 1-yard run, Kendrick's Matt Fletcher on a 3-yard run, and Garden Valley's Devin Yearsley on a 2-yard run.
The Idaho All-State Football event aims to bring awareness to the needs of foster care institutions in Idaho. According to an All-State Game website, roughly 1,800 children in Idaho are currently a part of the foster care system. A part of the proceeds from this weekend’s event will go to buying backpacks for children.
“Every year our mission is to encourage more parents to get involved with foster kids. You do not need to become a foster parent to get involved,” according to the website. “If you would like to know how you can help a foster child or teen a couple hours a month or quarter or want to know how to become a foster parent please email us to theallstategame@gmail.com.”
