Salmon River Savages vs Deary Mustangs
Saturday, Nov. 21 @ 7:00 p.m. PT, Kibbie Dome
Broadcast Commentators: Paul Kingsbury, Tyson Johnson, Ken Webster
Maybe distance really does make the heart grow fonder. After winning state championships in 2009, 2012 and 2013, last year the Savages were absent from the state tournament last fall for the first time since 2004. Going 3-5 and missing the playoffs entirely lit a fire under the team, nearly going undefeated this year with their only loss to Prairie, a top-ranked 1AD1 team also playing for a state championship this weekend.
Salmon River has a run game that is going to be tough to beat, especially in the friendly confines of the Kibbie Dome. Fab Freshman, Canyon Harper, looks to be next great player in a long line of great players to come out of Riggins. He is joined by fellow running backs Rylie Travis and Devin Buys who have all three combined for over 2,200 yards this season on the ground.
Deary is also a team that has a fine-tuned running attack, led by Tyler Anderson who has rushed for over 1,400 yards on 140 carries this season. But the Mustangs can mix it up to keep the defense honest, and that might cause some troubles for the Salmon River defense. Senior QB Morgan Beyer has tossed for 1,365 yards in 116 attempts completing nearly 64% of his passes. Not bad.
The game could come down to turnover and penalties. Ya, this is always a no-brainer, but this is the state championship game. There is no room for costly mental mistakes. Those should have all gotten out of their system during the regular season and playoff games. Deary is undefeated for a reason. They are good and don't make a lot of mistakes. Salmon River has to play a near-perfect game in respect to turn overs and penalties.
