We are almost at the mid-point of the football season and, like most years, we have a lot of undefeated teams. By my count, 30 teams to be exact. As a voter in the state-wide media poll every week, this is generally the week where I can stop speculating on a lot of these teams and know for sure which teams deserve to be in the top 5.
This weekend will pit several of these 30 undefeated teams against each other. A lot of them are between teams that have bounced around the rankings and teams that are solid #1 and #2 teams. Regardless of how it turns out, it will be fun to watch.
So....here are Paul's Picks for this week (5A, 4A and 3A):
5A
9/15 - CDA vs Skyline, Wa
This is the night cap at the Idaho Classic Saturday night at the Kibbie Dome. It pits the #1 5A team in Idaho (CDA) versus the current #1 4A team in Washington. CDA is going for their third 5A crown in as many years and it doesn't look there will be any competition for them in Idaho this year. Will the Spartans of Skyline give the Vikings their only loss of the year or will CDA solidify their spot atop the rankings for the rest of the year?
Paul's Pick - CDA over Skyline 34-28
4A
9/14 - Bishop Kelly vs Emmett
The Emmett Huskies have come on strong this season, beating Weiser, Mt Home and Nampa. While, admittedly, these aren't the strongest of teams, Emmett has come out strong in each one and walked away with a win. This week they get to do the proverbial putting up or shutting up as they host the "returning to glory" Bishop Kelly Knights. BK beat a battered, but still formidable, Skyview team on Sept. 1 and took Jerome out behind the woodshed last week, beating them 72-20. I heard BK onsided it when they were up 36-6 and then did a reverse pass after the onside. These Knights are taking no prisoners.
Paul's Pick - Bishop Kelly over Emmett 35-14
3A
9/14 - Shelley vs Preston
I know...Preston has only played one game, beating Marsh Valley 21-14. The Indians are playing in what is probably the toughest 4A conference in Idaho and new head coach, Nick Hyde, expects to surprise some people. But do they have enough to surprise this year's 3A power-house Shelley team? Shelley's first two wins of the season came against two teams that really didn't put up much of a fight, and they only beat Hillcrest by 3 points last week. Are they vulnerable?
Paul's Pick - Shelley over Preston 24-21
Tomorrow I will go over 2A - 1AD2.
