Sugar-Salem has claimed three of the last four 3A state football titles, and the Diggers enter this season as defending 3A state runner-up after a state title game for the ages last November.

That title was not decided until double overtime in an epic contest at Holt Arena. Weiser's Brett Spencer, now at Idaho State, stopped the Diggers' 2-point conversion attempt in what would be the final play of the game to give the Wolverines the 34-33 win and their first state title since 1997.

Sugar-Salem returns numerous players from its runner-up team, especially on the offensive and defensive line. Starting quarterback Daniel Neal, a senior who received first team All Mountain Rivers Conference honors, also returns, as does Carson Harris, a junior running back/linebacker who received second team all-state and first team All Mountain Rivers Conference honors.

Head coach Tyler Richins said that experience and depth will be huge strengths for Sugar-Salem in 2022. That experience also sets the foundation for the improvements the Diggers want to make on offense.

"Continue to improve our pass game and efficiency, control the line of scrimmage and secure the football," Richins said.

Defensively, Sugar-Salem also has a solid group of experienced linemen. Richins said the Diggers aim to win the turnover margin and hold opposing teams to an average of 10 points or less per game.

"Stopping the opponents' run game continues to be a priority," Richins said.

The Mountain Rivers Conference continues to be one of the of most competitive conferences in Idaho across all sports, and Richins expects Teton to be a team to keep an eye on this fall.
The Timberwolves have a new head coach in David Joyce.

"Talented group of kids that if they find their rhythm, they could really make some noise," Richins said.
