When new Emmett head coach Rich Hargitt ventured to Idaho everyone knew he would be bringing his renowned Surface to Air System offense to the Gem state. What people may not have realized is that it would become introduced elsewhere in the state as well, including at Parma where fifth year head coach Jake Walgamott will employ the run-pass option (RPO).

An entirely different backfield will greatly miss 2017 Snake River Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year Jesse Camacho. Parma still hopes to find success on the ground though with junior Joe Shaw taking over behind center and playmakers Trevor Gentry and Braydon Jensen representing two of his best options from the skill positions.

“We have a great group of receivers and an experienced quarterback. We are going to be a zone read and RPO team,” said Walgamott.

The new concept should help reduce the free additional opportunities that the Panthers allowed for the opposition far too often last season.

For Walgamott, holding onto the football is priority number one.

“Limit turnovers. We had way too many.”

With Shaw leading the way, the coach sees lots of potential on each side of the ball.

“I am excited about Joe Shaw’s leadership. He has shown a great understanding of the offense. Braydon Jensen is the big play guy on our team. Trevor Gentry and Dre Salinas lead the defensive front. All of the guys are showing a dedication in the weight room this summer.”

The Panthers lost 330-pound line anchor Trevor Driskell to graduation, but multiple quality players return to help mitigate that loss including Ryen Duke and Danny Camacho.

A 4-2-5 look on defense has quality talent at the linebacker position, but the rest of the defense will need to find a way to limit big plays after getting sliced up at points last year, giving up close to 39 points per game. Many of those big plays came on the ground, so stuffing the run is a big focus for Parma.

To begin the 2018 season the Panthers will head to Gooding for a tough matchup against a 3A semifinal team from a year ago.
