Team Preview:

The 2017 edition of the Teton Redskins football team possesses more of something than anyone else in the Mountain River Conference.

What is that something? It’s the ‘E’ word – experience.

The maroon-clad crew was a young and inexperienced crew just a year ago with only five seniors on the roster and a plethora of juniors and sophomores. And while the seniors have now moved on, those juniors and sophomores have a year of experience under their belts and have an edge in that department over every other team in their conference.

Teton brings back several players who received All-Conference honors, including wide receiver and defensive back Hunter DeRize, along with running back Coleby Hess, punter Talon Tonks, and linemen Chad LaRose and Keegan Kearsley. Expect these names to be rather familiar throughout the season.

After completing a disappointing 2-7 season which included numerous injuries all-around, the team’s outlook is looking up in 2017. Rival conference coaches have said that this year’s senior class at Teton is one to watch out for and that they are a great group who will compete every night.

Teton opens the season with four of their first five games on the road. Their journey begins on Aug. 25 when they travel across the Teton mountain range pass to take on Jackson, Wyoming. They’ll return home on Sept. 1 for a date against North Fremont, before hitting the road again for three straight weeks, including games at West Jefferson on Sept. 8, at Salmon on Sept. 15, and at Declo on Sept. 22.

The Redskins will then finish out the regular season with three of their final four games at home in Driggs, beginning with a clash against Snake River on Sept. 29. Mountain Rivers Conference play then opens on Oct. 6 on the road at defending state runner-up Shelley, followed by home dates with Sugar-Salem on Oct. 13 and South Fremont on Oct. 19.

For Teton, their key to the season may be their health. If they can remain relatively healthy throughout the year, they could certainly surprise a few folks and push their way into a playoff berth from the most competitive conference in the 3A classification.
