Garden Valley showed great improvement on the field last season, picking up three wins and becoming increasingly competitive on a weekly basis.

Entering his seventh year on the sideline, Jason Yearsley has the excitement level high for the Wolverines football program as the team looks to take the next step and secure a playoff spot this year.

While defending state champion Salmon River looks to be cemented atop the conference, the second spot should be wide-open, with a senior heavy Tri-Valley squad, an always tough Council and Garden Valley all figuring to factor into the race.

The Wolverines return a strong backfield led by running back Gage Peterson, also a linebacker on the defensive side of the ball.

Other All-Conference returners include tight end and linebacker Trystan Knox and defensive back Michael Palmer.

Senior quarterback and defensive end Darrell Lindstrom-Peppers should also help to keep stability, especially on offense.

That offense was a high-powered unit throughout 2016, putting up 26 or more points every week but two, including 58 points against Idaho City and 48 in a victory over Cascade.

Defensively it was a lot more of a struggle for the Wolverines last season, especially against high-powered offenses like Salmon River, Glenns Ferry, Wilder and Horseshoe Bend.

If Garden Valley can show improvement on defense this season it could help get the team into the upper echelon of the Long Pin Conference. The key to slowing down some of the more well-established offenses all comes down to handling running offenses.

The Wolverines begin the 2017 season on August 25 on the road against 1AD1 WIC defending champion Notus, a contest which should show how far along the defense in particular has come.

One thing is for sure though, the coaching job by Yearsley last year to get this team headed back in the right direction is one that should not go unnoticed, especially if Garden Valley can get into the playoff picture this time around.
