Vallivue was oh so close to a playoff spot last season, battling it out in what was arguably the toughest 4A conference in the state and coming just a win away from earning at least an extra week in the season.

From the moment the offseason began for the Falcons every amount of energy possible has been put into getting this team to the next step, something it has good potential of doing under the direction of 11th year Head Coach Layne Coffin.

In some key areas Vallivue is young, however strong experience surrounds that youth to try to minimize the impacts of major losses to graduation after last year, which included Jerred Monnier, the offensive player of the year, and Colton Yasinski, the anchor in the middle of the defense.

The youth starts right at the key spot of importance on offense, as sophomore quarterback Lan Larison gets ready to start another year after showing plenty of positives as a freshman at the varsity level.

"Lan Larison [QB], Nick Fox [RB] and Cory Marks [RB] will add speed to our offense," said Coffin. "[Our] offensive line is very athletic. Our focus will be to get off the ball and use deception in our wing offense."

Efficiency has to improve though.

"We need to be efficient in our passing game. Spent a lot of time in skel, trying to increase our comfortability with each other," added Coffin.

For the passing game, skel consists of focusing on speed and route combos, among other areas.

While the losses of Yasinski, All-Conference cornerback Gerardo Orsornio and All-State defensive lineman Noah Salgado will make things difficult defensively, expect the Falcons to still be strong on this side of the ball.

"We are returning Nick Fox, Gabe Childs, Tyler Mansell, Cobe Lehman, Skylar Stokesberry, Daniel Sanchez, Jon MagPantay, Grant Garner and Tristan Wolfe, all who have started at one point, and seen significant time on defense," said Coffin. "Effort and support of each other is what we are looking for."

As the team continues to get into the flow of the scheme, expect consistent improvement throughout the year.

"It's our second year in this defense [and] we are working to get more comfortable with the scheme," added Coffin.

With this group, the head coach has enjoyed seeing the progression in the offseason.

"I really enjoy watching these kids work the process of support for each other. I see a culture of change."

To get to the next level, it all starts with a team focus.

"Effort and support for each other. It’s got to be a team first culture," said Coffin.

Vallivue's first game comes on August 25 as the Falcons welcome in Twin Falls.
