Team Preview:

If there was any question regarding Capital's place in the upper echelon of teams in the 5A classification that doubt was obliterated early and often in 2016, as the Eagles advanced all the way to the state title game before falling to Mountain View.

Entering his 14th season as head coach, Todd Simis will have a major task in front of him this time around with every starter outside of offensive lineman Drew McGuinn gone on offense and some holes to fill from what was an outstanding senior class on defense as well.

What should help the Eagles to not miss as much of a beat as some might expect is the emergence of a great JV squad from a year ago rising up to varsity competition, with that Capital JV having gone undefeated last season.

Asking a coach what they are most excited about for the new season always yields a variety of answers, but for Simis, this reload of the varsity team is the obvious choice.

"Just the challenge of starting over with so many new faces."

The loss of SIC Player of the Year and star quarterback Drew Korf will be tough to replace on offense. It is yet to be determined who the Eagles will turn to in this role, however the pick needs to be able to run and throw to best maximize the productivity.

"We are an up-tempo team that likes to use multiple formations to keep the defense off-balance," said Simis. "Our quarterback has to be a dual-threat in our scheme."

With just one returner, it means improving on last year might be a tall order.

"Don’t think we can improve on last year," added Simis.

But like any good coach, he can think of a couple things anyway.

"Maybe short yardage situations. Be more consistent."

While the offense tries to get going in the early portion of the season, the Eagles will rely heavily on what should again be a strong defense to carry the load.

"Our team speed on defense will be very good," said Simis. "Love the mentality our coaches preach on defense. They fly to the ball on every play."

Honorable Mention All-Conference selection Carter Johnson is back at defensive back to anchor the defense, where he will be joined by fellow seniors Jordan Godeny-Scott and Payton Hamilton in the back end, while Keagan McCoy and Reed Johnson have great potential on the line and at linebacker respectively.

In order to continue to be in the upper tier of the SIC this season, Capital will be looking to force more turnovers from the opposition.

But the real x-factor is simple.

"How quickly can our newcomers gel and become varsity 'guys'?" said Simis.

Those players will have to come together quick, as huge matchups loom in the early season with Rocky Mountain and Highland, a couple games that will tell a lot about the makeup of 5A football this season.

For the Capital Eagles, those battles will be an opportunity to prove that this group is yet again a force to be reckoned with towards the top of the classification.
