Being Idaho’s smallest conference along with the 1AD1 High Desert Conference, the 2A Canyon Conference between Declo and Wendell receives just a half berth into the state tournament, where the winner of the district tournament will take on the third seed out of district three.

Heading into the season, Declo is the favorite, returning seniors Jaesa Fox and Maddie Matthews down-low and Kelly Montoya on the perimeter.

The Hornets also have Mattie Ramsey, who could see an increase in productivity in the new campaign.

“This team plays tough defense,” said first year Declo head coach Heather Gibby. “They are quick and move the ball up the floor and we hope to capitalize on this quickness.”

With so much experience returning, that should give the Hornets an edge against many of the younger teams they will play in non-conference action.

“The experience of this team [I am excited for]. Increasing the use of our post players by giving them more of a role in the offense and using our quickness to push the ball up the floor,” said Gibby.

Replacing the talented Paige Ramsey and Kelsie Hamilton will be difficult, but with the added emphasis on getting the ball into the post, Declo hopes to see other players fill the shoes in a variety of different ways.

Wendell won five games last season and returns three players in Olivia Gines, Robin Moreno and Jackie Hollenbeck, all seniors. The Trojans had difficulty scoring the basketball last year, eclipsing the 50 point mark just once, in a 61-53 loss to Gooding.

If Wendell can find a couple of go-to options to fill up the scoreboard it would go a long way into getting the Trojans back into the state tournament this season after a one year hiatus.
